Virgin mobile drops 3g connection

Hi guys,

Just moved to Virgin.

Sometimes my Sensation drops back to a useless G connection. If I force t he phone into WCDMA only mode then it holds onto 3g without issues.

Any ideas why? It's very annoying. Phone is in the same place on the desk...
 
No, it doesn't. Works fine on Vodafone and holds a solid H at all times.

Interesting I now have full H again. I wonder if its related to the everything everywhere signal sharing...
 
I get this sometimes both on my old Desire and, to a lesser extent, on the S3. I find it only happens when I am on "T-Mobile Orange" instead of T-Mobile. I guess your phone will just show Virgin irrespective if it is on the T-Mobile or Orange side of things?

I have complained about it but sod all has been done. I have to manually choose T-Mobile if it happens which, since changing jobs, is far less.
 
Just a tip, I think I am correct in saying that if your phone reports the service provider as "Virgin" with a capital "V" this is T-Mobile network coverage. Small "v" and it's Orange network. You can't manually select Orange over T-Mobile, it will only fall onto Orange if it has no T-Mobile signal.
I personally don't pay much attention to whether it's H or G on the signal. I know in my house, it really struggles to even get a G, but at work it's always on H. I find the coverage when out and about totally fine with Virgin. To be honest if anything it seems to have less black spots than I had with O2 in my area.
 
So if I am in an area with poor T-Mobile coverage - say 1 bar - it'll hang onto that instead of the perfect Orange signal? Hmmm.

Also, what are data speeds like? I did speedtest using my Vodafone SIM - 5mb/s - then put the Virgin SIM in and got 1.5mb/s.
 
On the Sensation?

With my dodgy coverage I find that the Sensation will be in no hurry to grab a high speed connection again once it has lost it. It can sit for minutes with a 2G only connection before deciding to look for 3G, and then suddenly I have 4 or 5 bars of shiny 3G coverage.

So I think the theory of it hanging onto a poor or lost signal might hold true.
 
Want reliable 3G then go to Three if you ask me. Tried all the main networks now and whilst they have 3G coverage in the city, outside it's atrocious. With Three I always have it so for me it's ideal. Oh and unlimited :p
 
Virgin used to prefer the T-Mo network over orange (when they had access to both) but it might have changed in recent times, I'll try and ask someone later today. The speed test is probably more down to the HSDPA variant they run, Voda has a majority of sites at 7.2Mbps, the majority of Ora/T-M sites are at 3.6Mbps.
 
I just ran a quick speedtest using the speedtest app on my Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus, and it says 1914kbps download, 102kbps upload. My signal says "Virgin" (which is T-Mobile) and is on 4 out of 4 bars with the H lit up.
To be honest, I don't tend to rinse my phone out with the data connection. I connect to wi-fi for intensive stuff like youtube at home. The 3G/H is more for background data sync stuff and it never has any major slow down that I notice. Browsing also seems fine.
