Hi all,

Debating what to do and need some help.

Do I go with BT infinity - up to 40mb (estimated 20mb) and stick with Sky on half price for 6 months or do I go to Virgin 50mb and their XL tv package?

Ive heard BT infinity drop your speed after 100gig, whereas Virgin do not have any caps or shaping on their 50mb?

Any recommendations?

Go for vrigin imo, no caps, guaranteed speed, and they are going to up to 100mB soon.

Whats wrong with your sky package btw

Nothing wrong with the sky package, but if I go to virgin, its cheaper to take it all from them. Rroff, have you got a source for that info? That certainly changes things. 300gb is plenty for me but 100gb may not be enough.

Virgin is 1.5mb up, whereas BT infinity is quoting me 8.8Mb upload. Does this make much difference if Im not running a ftp or anything?

Thats quite cool.

Hmmmm don't know what to do!

Anyone know if the BT infinity speed estimation is accurate?

Can you post stats from your current router? tho won't help entirely as FTTC is a bit different - but should give a general idea of the line quality in your area.

The BT estimate usually un-reads slightly to reduce people whining about not getting the speeds they "paid" for but theres no guarantees with DSL.

Go for Virgin. Faster speeds, no caps, low latency.
Only thing Infinity has going for it is the 10Mb upload speeds, which are worth bearing in mind.

I did hear that Virgin are planning to increase upload speeds fairly soon though, around the time of their 100Mb service introduction. I believe the ratio in intended to be at least 10:1 download to upload.

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,109 / 5,836
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 54.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 6.0

Its impossible to do any hard science, especially not knowing your distance to the cab, but based on the way BT estimate it and taking current line into consideration the minimum you should see is 15MBit/s (minimum BT will accept for infinity anyhow) and more likely in the range of 24-28MBit.

Rumors that the Virgin 50mb will go up 100mb by end of year, and that the upload will be 10percent of download speed...You do the maths...

Never going back to BT

Virgin They should be rolling out their updated upload speeds soon, at 10/1 20/2 and 50/5 that would put 100 to 10 But some modems that they are testing on have been put to 10 on 50. Off topic but what kind of latency's are people seeing on Infinity?

Hmm yeah just reading the BT forums. Obviously people will only post the bad things but those who are having trouble seem to be getting little in the way of support
