Virgin or BT Infinity?

oh and Amrit there a lot more than 30 houses to a cab on my first day i went to one that 700 lines E side and it seemed that nearly everyone was jumpered, that was including the jumpering to the Dslam (fibre cab).

700?! Oh My God! And its all stable?

The cabs stable but the network has problems otherwise i wouldn't have a job fixing it.

Cables dont get replaced unless they fail and by that i dont mean one or two pairs failing. A lot of time a cable or more likely a section of cable will be jointed into a failed section this is obviously cheaper than digging up a 10 Mile long cable.

Its very similar to when i worked on Fibre cable laying ships we would just pick up a section either side of the fault and replace it.

Most of the time this happens, in some areas the connectors from the jumpers have turned black. Still always fun to try and get them to work again. :D

I have replaced a trunk cable before which had totally failed (due to a gas company cutting through the bloody thing. I swear the cable was from the 70's it was out in the sticks though. There was a massive boost in speed around Alnwick / Newbiggen when it was replaced.

Are you Wholesale or Global Services - guessing from your post Wholesale / Global Services - Customer Service Engineer / Tech?

It isn't possible until someone manages to "crack" it.
Yeah it seems there is a way in but it's currently unknown for the average user.

I think I know the piece of kit you are referring to, except it isn't really a modem - just a receiver. As it is CPE (Consumer Premises Equipment) I have only ever seen these in the first build and the later revisions. We would use testing kit similar to test the connections but this would have the debug / troubleshooting info / stats. This is not CPE - as it is considered engineers or technicians equipment.
Not sure what the difference between a modem and a receiver is? The CPE is a HUAWEI Echolife HG612 VDSL2+ modem modified for Openreach. There is an internal shot here if your interested.

The engineer did show me the stats on his JDSU, would love one of those (plus the knowledge to use it lol).

Might ask some of the customer service engineers who do the field installs if the CPE can have these features or some way to enable them.
It would be good if you could. Reading around there is an interface but knowone knows how to access it and I get the impression openreach/BT would prefer it to stay that way.
Not a big deal really as long as the connection stays stable.

Dave from Plusnet posted some stats here but it's not clear if those are from the openreach HUAWEI modem and they don't include attenuation or noise margin.

Mainly do back-end and mid-end work. I am trained on how to setup the feed and told how to setup the release "modems" if I need to. But don't really have that practical experience of yet... sorry.
No need to apologise, I appreciate you taking the time to answer. :)

I went to 50Mb/s a few weeks back and after a few days I got the 5Mb/s upload upgrade.
I get 95-98% of the rated speed 24/7 and after years of 10 meg then 20 meg I can say that only being capped to 6GB upload between 3pm and 9pm is my only gripe.
I do transfer the maximum possible traffic and never get any letters from VM.
When using newsgroup protocols I do have to cranks up the number of connections at certain times to hit max speed and using multiple servers set to different ports (SSL) helps too.

The service is brilliant and if I ever experience downtime I get £5 of my monthly bill... which happens very rarely.

Have been training in the exchange this week on the MDF, Chelmsford exchange is a scary place for a newbie like me :)

Jake im just training as a scum of the earth Dside engineer, get my van next week hehe
