Hey, recently I just moved house and decided to go with virgin 8mb broadband. Connected through a modem 'connected at 4.4Mb's

Set up the wireless router, so good so far

Tried downloading, can download at 400KB's occasionally but this seems to all over the place atm going at low as 30kbs.

Also earlier on www.speedtest.net I got a conectection speed of 2.4mbs but now I can only get 0.5mbs?!! Ping on 2142 is 150+ :(

Any else experienced any similar issues or have any fixes, there any wireless settings I could change.

Thanks

VMCable has been poor for me for days.

They're shaping a lot of people from 4pm onwards, regardless of traffic. Are you experiencing these issues all day, or just in the evenings?

On ADSl, and the speed seems to be all over the shop, some time its only 0.2mbs other times its fine. It did seem to slow down at about 4pm but it may just be coinsidence

Well it is just about peak time and websites are loading slow, and I am downloading off usenet at 300KB/s off my 20MB connection. My connection has been crap ever since they started traffic shaping so even when I have not hit the 3GB cap i sitll get crap download speeds.

Dam I wish I didnt get the virgin broadband crap. All night ive had only double dial up speed.

I don't understand how they can get away with this, its robbery!

Might just pay the £50 and change, anyone know of a solid broadband package for 4MB+ unlimited?

I got VM a month ago and its been solid 4mb the whole time.

You can get upgraded to cable from adsl for the 20 quid cost of the engeneers comnig to fit it in for you i beleive.

Any evidence to prove this or just witch hunting?

It pretty bad for me too from about 4pm onwards. I thought maybe theres a new user in my area hammering the downloads but maybe not. I play a lot of online poker but have given up for the time being the tables keep timing out.

Oh and no im not a heavy d/ler. I've been thinking about talking to tech support but from what i've heard on heres its a bit of a nightmare at 25p a minutes taking to some 1 in India having a job to understand them, even getting hung up on sometimes.

Way its going i'll be ringing up to cancell. I just know deep down nothing will change. They have been great for nearly 8 years but its all over now.

Im on 20mb and get great speeds after 1am to about 3pm the next day.
After 3pm speeds start to drop, ive just checked newsgroups and im downloading at 1.1mb/sec, off peak im hitting 2.34mb so its basically half the speed at peak times and this is without traffic shaping as i havent been on the net all day. Just did the newsgroup to test out the connection speed.
It doesnt really bother me because if i need to do some downloading i can schedule it to take place in the early hours of the morning, but i can see how it can be frustrating for people when they are paying £37 for 20mb and getting poor speeds when they use it the most, ie after 4pm.

Here you go

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

Broadband Size: M
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: M package download at least 350MB of traffic each.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 1Mb, with their upload speed set to 128Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

Even if a Broadband Size: M user has their speed temporarily traffic managed, they can still download over 1,000 music files per day.

Broadband Size: L
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: L package download at least 750MB of traffic each.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 2Mb, with their upload speed set to 192Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

Even if a Broadband: Size L user has their speed temporarily traffic managed, they can still download over 1,500 music files per day.

Broadband Size: XL
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: XL package download at least 3GB of traffic each.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 5Mb, with their upload speed set to 256Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

Even if a Broadband Size: XL user has their speed temporarily traffic managed, they can still download over 4,000 music files per day.

yer i did a double take, was on a car fourm the other day and saw the title

Limited Slip Diff if u don't know what that means lol

I've not had tooooo many problem with virgin, i get about 100kb down between 4-midnite and then any where between 150-500 bk at any other time. and thats a 1mb line. and about 40 kb tops on up steam

im connected at 76kbs atm! earlier I was connected at just under 4000kps. There is a guy that I allways see on the computer downstairs but im not sure what hes doing on there. I hope this is just temporary!

Another pointless post.

Why would I witch hunt? What possible gain would I get from slagging VM, if they were causing no issues whatsoever?

Also, don't assume everyone is on the XL package, i'm on 2Mb, and I can assure you they're shaping me from 4 pm onwards whether there has been any traffic over the connection at all.

Quite how I can prove that is another matter. But then i'm not in the market to have to prove anything, this forum is based on experience and opinion. The above is my previous experience.

Secondary to that, the figures above are BS, between 4pm and midnight it's 500Kb/s at best. ( For me anyway )

It's not pointless at all. I simply want to know if what you say is true as it would impact thousands of people. I can't see why VM would shape someone on 2mb, sounds more like a contention or line problem to me.

What I say is true judging by my own, and other peoples experience. Again, I have no reason to lie at all.

VM do indeed shape people on a 2Mb connection, as per Ts and Cs.

I do take on board what you're saying about contention though, it's certainly a possibility. Seems to be a fair number of issues for VM customers at the moment, just hope they do something to sort it out.
