Virgin Stealing my Webspace

Thanks, I'm going to use Flickr, I still can't get a link to work from Google Photo's maybe because I'm using Edge?

Next up is zip files - would someone be willing to see if they can download this it's just the BIOS tweaker for Kepler cards that I posted on a thread in the Graphics Card forum.

seems to download fine :)

That's great thanks very much for checking.

So I've managed to find a workaround but I'm seriously angry with Virgin. I've written product reviews, published extensive benchmarking results and written animal welfare guides which will all now be broken or unavailable.

I share your pain OP. I missed the letter but got the email today saying they're closing down their webspace. Probably wiping their servers to offer a new product, colour me cynical. Such a ballache as I've links to images and buildlogs scattered around the internet, it's a lot of work sorting it out.

I think I'll look for a paid account somewhere.

I got an email about this... they give you 12 months godaddy hosting as a replacement.

Yeah, I saw that but in all reality it's a lie. Your already paying for your webspace through your monthly Virgin subscription which I don't see being reduced with the removal of product/facility.

Also, the GoDaddy pack that you get "free" is far worse than GoDaddy's bottom tier economy pack:

Virgin's GoDaddy:
Email - 1 email address
Storage - 1GB
Bandwidth - 150GB
Cost - free the first year then £59.88 (then add vat = £71.86 which the email fails to mention).

GoDaddy's Economy:
Email - 100 email addresses
Storage - 100GB
Bandwith - Unlimited
Cost - £43.06 for the first year then £71.86

Oh look, the GoDaddy Economy is the same price (after a year) as the Virgin GoDaddy replacement but Virgin's is severely reduced in storage and bandwidth. There's also no mention if it's Linux or Windows servers; there's a big difference.

Be careful, you don't want to be stuck in that Virgin package and have to change all your source links again when you jump ship.

Personally I'm looking elsewhere, just don't know where to yet :).

Posting images the way you do here is way out of date. Surely it's easier to post from ones pc just like lots of other forums do.

Following Mysterae_'s info here are extracts from my web chat with GoDaddy which I assume Mysterae_, Psypher5, ED209 and other folks in the same position will find interesting;

Me: "can you tell me what the charges will be after the first year"
GD: "For the renewals, it is about £110/yr"
Me: I have documents and photo's on my Virgin webspace that are shared on internet sites via URL's is there anything you can do so that if I move to you these links are not broken?"
GD: "No, we do not support the move of the content."
Me: "the letter I have from virgin says that there are 'extras' including "tools to help you move your existing site""
GD: "Virgin's letter was poorly worded regarding that. You are able to move your content yourself, but we do not have any tools or offer to move it for you"
Me: "If I just want a small amount of space so that I can move my files and share them via URL's is there anything that you offer that would achieve this for as little cost as possible?"
GD: "That is not included with the current offer. You would need to purchase standard web hosting separately to host your own files outside the website builder."

I wrote a letter of complaint to Virgin explaining that articles and information I have published online for healthcare, animal husbandry, flight simulation, computer guides will all now be either unavailable or the images supporting this work will no longer be available rendering the many hours of work I have put into these wasted. I got an acknowledgement letter back saying they wil investigate the issue for me but it's been weeks since and nothing .........

I don't think you quite understand the mechanics behind this. If you publish anything to the web it has to be hosted on a web server so it is permanently available. Hosting requires infrastructure (i.e. servers, LAN & ISP connectivity) and resources (i.e. disk space, electricity), this is not without cost especially when you are dealing with many thousands or even millions of images and documents. I doubt that many forums would be willing to pay for this out of their own pocket and I actually don't know of any that do so. Most forums therefore expect the poster to link to images and documents that are hosted externally and the easiest way to do this is to have your own webspace where you can store these items and easily link to them via a direct URL. You can either rent this webspace from an ISP or as was the case with Virgin you got a small amount as part of your bundle with them.......

Or go buy your own web hosting which is available at a fraction of GoDaddy BS with other providers, offers a full Cpanel interface, unlimited email accounts, FTP/SSH/Other access etc etc. I pay less than £30 per year.

What are your space requirements?

Do you host html pages, most people seem to have missed that you are hosting more than just images?

Do you have any bandwidth statistics?

My initial gut feeling is that you should just set up a dropbox and link to that as you get 5GB for free and I don't think they are going to disappear anytime soon. All your links are going to get broken which is unfortunate but the reality as virgin won't supply redirects to you new storage. Your other option is to just get a cheap hosting package from almost anyone except GoDaddy, this will incur a yearly fee for both your domain (you could like to IP but that is messy) and the hosting which is less than ideal for a replacement to your current free service.

Another option is to set up a home based server that can serve the files via your home internet connection. This too would require a domain to be registered however.
