Virgin to Increase speed for free

Ill put everything back to the previous values before doing anymore. I posted my problem just then and at the end of the post i said 'should i adjust the frequency and value'. I forgot to add the power value though

Great, now the newsgroups won't connect to the server. Does this happen often? They probably won't reply for another few hours anyway

not sure but i read a few posts saying the groups had gone downhill as of late.

I have a Motorala Surfboard SB4100. When I click that link it leads me straight into the software page without any password. I've looked through the pages and have yet to find 'Maximum Downstream Data Rate'

Is there a page which states whether my modem is capable of supporting the upgrade?

Just checked this page - http://allyours.virginmedia.com/cgi-bin/formactions/uplift_customer.pl

It says with the Large package 4mb-10mb upgrade my modem will be fine. Hmm now i'm confused.

I had the same modem as you and could not get anywhere near to 20meg downloads.
A friend of mine works for virgin media and he changed my modem to a scientific atlanta 2100 and its fine now i get just over 20meg.
I would telephone them as they no that the modem you have does not support 20meg downloads and they will give you a new modem.

I've been speaking to a guy on the virgin newgroups and he suggested my upstream is too slow or something and a tech guy would be the best bet so hes coming tomorrow. Would have been easier just sending out a new modem probably

I upgraded from 2M to 10M & found that I hit about 850k max with my Terayon TJ210 modem. I phoned up & explained to customer support, they a said they'd post me a new modem........

I had a new modem delivered by UPS within 48Hrs

A rather shocking good support from Virgin Story !!!

at least if its not the modem he can try and figure out what it is, win win :D

Ye. My modem passes their test on the website so I assume the tech guy would be breaking some sort of rule if he sent me out a new modem with (in theory) a working modem already at the house

Is that a newsgroup? Can't see it listed on their website

I posted on their support.broadband section anyway

yea its the official newsgroup for support so you dont have to deal with the dodgy call centre and end up talking to someone who doesnt know anything about cable modems or how the service works.

you seem to have got to the right place anyway.

you still might get a new modem even if the guy is only coming to look at your line, you should take your modem casing apart and sever the connection to a transisitor or something inside and tell the tech guy the modem stoped working altogether :P

btw sb4100 doesnt have the page that tells you how fast the connection is you have to look at the modems log and see which config it downloaded it when the modem connected
it should be an entry like cm-20480-768 (which is the 20mbit one)

Just had the guy come round and replace the modem. He did the test on speedtest.net and was getting about 7-8meg and said that was sufficient. I'm getting around 700-800k max speeds now. I have seen it reach about 960k on a blueyonder download but nothing over 1mb yet. I'm not complaining over 300k really.

Actually downloading has gone back down to 4-5meg speed again. I posted on newsgroups with my stats from config and suggested sending out another technician :(

sb4100 theoritcally suports 38mb but its cpu is weak so it doesnt even handle 20.

get a modem upgrade. you will probably get a scientific atlanta 2100 ( WebSTAR EPC2100R2) as replacement
your recieve power level is far to high btw, if you know how to use newsgroups

goto news.virginmedia.com (no password but you might have to use your username)
subscribe to V.S.B.Cable
post saying you never get much faster than 12mbit and you think its because your modem is old.
ask if your power levels are okay and just copy/paste all the text on the page that has the frequency listed.

whoever replys should just book you a tech for a modem swap and to check your line.

i dont know why but even if your power levels are completly out of spec they never just get network to alter them they always send a tech first...

Your one of the few that gets this. ;)

The SB4100 is rated for 38MEG as you said, its the CPU and QAM that can be borderline for 20meg. :)

When is 50mb going to be an upgrade option?

and how much will the upload speed be?, i want to start my own game server.. pretty soon i will probably rent a 24-30 player server perhaps instead

Weren't a lot of the older modems only rated for burst speed, hence they could do 38mbit, but only for a few fractions of a second? (rather like SATA interfaces that might be rated to do 1.5gbs/3gps, but only for a fraction of a second until the cache is filled/emptied).

Perfect Chaos, it'll be an upgrade from the normal tiers, so cost extra (and i think has a relatively low upload speed).

I spoke to a VM rep today to get my monthly price dropped as my 12month offer @ £29 ended this month (resubscribed at same price!) and he didn't know when the 50MB is going live and apparently I'm the first to mention the survey they sent out few weeks back!

As far as i seen the 50meg is a different tier so won't be upgrades and it seems 1.5mbs upload from what i seen here

Had a technician out who replaced an old connector and now my stats on the config page are more normal. Still, my download speeds roughly range from 400k-700k. More of a 6meg connection rather than ten but it'll do

If you don't want all of the 10meg you're paying for can you ask Virgin to pass it on to me

;)

Sorry if it's been mentioned in this thread already, but i'm pretty sure that 20MB users will NOT be upped to 50MB, AFAIA it's a separate 'premium' package
