virginmedia throttling

Been having kinda the same thing from Virgin Media in the last 3 days, Sunday i couldn't use my connection at all, speeds of less than 28.8k & web pages taking 30mins+ to load, still gradually getting worse. I'm surprised I've got here.

Rang them & all I got is "you've downloaded too much your connection is being capped by STM" 4mb to 28.8k is a lot of difference from the 1mb it says on the site. Funny thing is i hadn't downloaded anything major since Thursday.

For you I'd do what Youstolemyname said.

I wrote this in another thread on the forum, My experience of Virgin Media at present is horrible. Every month there seems to be a new problem arising, modems giving up, 28.8k speeds as mentioned in the quote, getting charged £7 for them to say it was windows firewall (funny how it all works until 8am on Sunday & then all of a sudden gives up) Spent the best part of 4hours going through crap with them on Sunday.

When they finally came to the "problem" I say that very loosely as they blamed my horrible connection on me downloading too much so being in effect of STM, Funny STM that cycles the modem every few minutes or so, Tuesday is here now & it is still the same. If it does not get better by tomorrow then i shall be ringing again.

Some of us have PC's in our bedrooms and wish to sleep without background hum :(

yea it's a bit annoying but what im planning to do for next year when we move student house (10 houses up the road.. lol) is get a crappy pc (the uni chucks our quite a few so gunna try and get one of them and the HDD's from some others) something liek a P4, and get as many HDD's as i can for storage and raid them, then just set it up on the house router under the stairs to run 24/7. install a torrent program and et it an ip. then if something wants to be downloaded all the user has to do is from their pc is go on the webtorrent client for the pc and add the files and then it will be set to downlaod over the night :D no more worries about using the net in the day and lowering of speeds :D

Indeed. We've been doing a very similar thing for years. uTorrent has the ability to automatically load all .torrent files in a specified folder so an even more lazy way to download stuff is to just share that folder and users just copy the .torrent to there (or even *more* lazy, make a .bat file that automatically copies .torrents from your temporary internet files folder periodically).

ok this is silly... i know im downloading in the peak time but only downloading a 300mb patch and only 200mb into it and i get throttled :( though the limit was much higher! this is just stupid, now the download time has over doubled since it started to download, and thats only to do a 3rd of it :( virgin sucks :( come back ntl!!!!
