Virtual Memory question

If he's running an OS newer than windows 98 i would suspect it's his 'lack of memory' causing all his problems - as the later OS's would have real problems running on 256MB.

If not, and he's running windows 98 or earlier, open up windows task manager and click on 'view' and select 'columns' then select the 'Virtual Memory Size box' and then click ‘OK’ - now look to see what processes are taking up all his virtual memory.

From a quick google - it's worth uninstalling and re-installing the worse offenders.

My mates PC comes up saying that he is running out of virtual memory! Is that because he only has 256mb of ram?

256mb is not a lot so probably.

Also, has he recently run out of hard drive space? Hard drive space is sometimes used to store data that would otherwise have to be held in memory, so that could be an issue here too I believe.

Rgds

He is running XP with 256mb ram! I guess that is too low?

Not really, as the minimum spec is 64MB but reality is that it's 128MB+ and as your friend has 256MB, in theory, if his system is tidy he should be ok - but it will be stretched if he's running a lot of apps that are leaking...

I would run the test i listed above and see what it gives up...

Ive run xp with 256mb of ram before, ran fairly well. Just make sure it isnt stuffed with crap otherwise you will get the virtual memory errors and such. Maybe increasing the virtual memory will be a sensiable thing to do as well ;)
