Has anybody set up a virtual PBX with a UK SIP/VoIP provider? This is a new area for me that I'd like to have a play with. I've seen things like FreePBX and PBX in a Flash as possibilities but I'm a little hazy on how these link to a provider of an actual phone number.

Small-scale recommendations welcome :)

used free pbx in a flash seen it get hacked as its open source .. i wouldnt use it!
i use 3cx now on a windows platform on a vm .. does good job and is bridged with the USA, china, and Canada and works really well.

there is a free version avaliable as well.

I use VOIPTalk with a few softphones and also one SIP Phone and it works well, am aware they also do a hosted PBX Solution which is not expensive.

Used Asterisk/PBXinaflash along with VOIPtalk for quite a while. Nothing bad to report at all and they offer IAX2 trunks as an option rather than using SIP trunks. I used them for both incoming DDI calls as well as outbound calling.

In terms of it getting hacked, it comes down to the standard security worries that you should have. Don't expose it to any more of the internet than you need to (only port 4569 if you're using IAX2 trunks). Theres a nice script you can run after installing PBXinaflash called the IncrediblePBX, which preconfigures quite a few options and hardens the server as well.

Check out http://nerdvittles.com/ for some good info on it all. They've always seemed to been quite security conscious when I've read their articles and guides.

I had a look at 3CX but the free version is a bit lacking on the features compared to the open source alternatives, so I'll pursue them first. I've been playing with Elastix and Sipgate, but I just can't get the damn thing to connect. I'm sure it's firewall rules but I can't find any logging in the Elastix UI so I'm flying blind.

Will give PIAF a go next. How do you guys handle SIP trunks through a NAT firewall?

Got it working :D

It took a while to find trunk settings for Sipgate that worked (every site with an example seems to be different) but it finally connected last night and I can make and receive calls and leave voicemail too. Very clever stuff. No firewall rules necessary in the end.

Next move will be to add a VLAN for VoIP...

One note of caution - can you set credit / spend limits with your SIP provider? I've seen people testing, not getting the configuration right and getting for a huge bill when the PBX gets hacked...
