Virtualbox

Gaming is probably out of the question. All the VMs I've used have no / very limited 3D acceleration.

VirtualBox is nice and fast... I'd use it if it allowed me to create an SMP VM with two virtual processors like VMWare does.

Yeah gaming is a no-no as the directx support is a bit limited.

I'm not 100% sure i know what you mean about SMP, but XP can see and use both of my cores on Virtualbox.

Looking at getting some virtualisation software sorted on the laptop - what doyou think is the best way of doing this?

Windows host or LInux host?

Only asking to see if I need to format the laptop or not :D

The new version of VMWare 6.5 that came out yesterday has the follwing awesome features:

# Accelerated 3-D graphics on Windows XP guests — Workstation 6.5 virtual machines now work with applications that use DirectX 9 accelerated graphics with shaders up through Shader Model 2.0 on Windows XP guests. Hosts can be running Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Linux.

# Unity mode — Integrate your favorite guest applications with your host. Open the application window, enter Unity mode, and the Workstation window is automatically minimized. The guest application windows look just like host application windows, but with color-coded borders. You can access the virtual machine's Start menu (for Windows virtual machines) or Applications menu (for Linux virtual machines) by placing the mouse pointer over the host's Start or Applications menu, or by using a key combination.

Ive always prefered vmware to virutalbox, and im really interested to see how good the DirectX 9 support is in this new version.

Do you have two graphs in task manager? I couldn't figure out how to make it work.

you're right.. it only shows the one graph. I'm sure I had both cores working before. I may be mistaken.

EDIT - on looking carefully it looks like XP identifies the CPU description as a dualcore, but only actually sees 1 core.

oo do i need to disable em?

also i wonder is 2Gb ram enough to run photoshop on windows on virtualbox, i usually make banners and sigs for fun :P

btw i had some trouble finding correct version of virtual box, first i used ose(not knowing there was diff version), then my friend told me to use sun version, then i go on site and find there a ose and normal one but i wasn't able to get seamless work on any of them =/ any one link me the correct file or page to download?

I run winXP in virtualbox on ubuntu specifically to use photoshop, CS3 works flawlessly, loads up super quick on my laptop (4GB ram). Just make sure you check the mount CD and enable passthrough in settings or you will get an error at the end of installation.

Have to say I'm very impressed with it so far, very easy to get up and running and surprisingly quick. I got the very top file 2.02 for linux ubuntu 8.04 i386, gives you a .deb file double click and your done :D
