I have just installed windows 7 ( 64 bit ) and wish to run a virtual machine. What is the best VM software to use? I was going to use Virtual Box but a collegue of mine always used VMWare, which has now made me dither.

What are your opinions on VM software?

Many Thanks

They all work well, my preference is VMWare but only because I use it at work too, the microsoft one is good but has some problems with certain linux distros last time I checked.
Id say the choice would be :

VMWare workstation : If you dont have to pay for it then I would go for this every time.

Microsoft Virtual PC : If you know for certain you will be windows only and just want something basic.

Virtualbox if you want windows and linux etc and dont mind some of the advanced stuff sometimes being a little less user friendly to set up than VMWare (most of the functionality is still there though)

Things might have changed since i last played with them all but VMware has never let me down so I've had no cause to look round the others again recently.

We run a considerable number of VMware based servers and I have to say, they are pretty good thus far.

The only issues we've encountered is converting NT boxes (yes we had some NT), they've worked but do every so often bluescreen - fortunately these are legacy and test servers so none critical.

Theres a free version of vmware (player iirc) which with v3 (currently beta but v2 beta was fine) can actually make a vm too.

I used it for xp in windows vista and it seemed pretty good, even worked with my usb scanner etc
