Hi all,

After a particular frustrating morning im sitting on my 2nd PC whilst my main rig is formatting and reinstalling Windows. To cut a long story short, this morning a virus deleted my entire Windows directory leaving it compleltly unrepairable. After speaking to Microsoft tech team via phone, it has been comfirmed as some sort of virus. Luckily not much will be lost but still a big inconveniance for me!

I was using AVG free edition and the standard Windows firewall as my protection, always kept up to date etc but I suppose I get what I pay for so now may be a time to get new Anti Virus software. Any recommendations on whats the best on the market? I dont mind paying but i dont want anything with a heavy interface or intrusive software that gets in the way, just want it to run in the background and do a proper job.

Many thanks in advance :(

Unlucky there.

You wouldn't happen to have a name for this virus would you because all I have is AVG and windows firewall and it dosn't sound fun.

I've found Avast to be good, combined with Windows firewall or Zonealarm (which I personally don't bother with now) and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Avast is free, although there is a payware 'Pro' version. I'd have to agree with these guys though, that if you're going to buy Kaspersky/NOD32 are the best.

They are currently 'looking into it' apparantly as they hadnt come accross a case like mine before and some of the error messages were confusing so they said they will look into it and get back to me to tell me what it was exactly, probably something new and undetected. Ive heard a lot of bad stuff about AVG free edition though so this is a great excuse for me to jump ship. NOD32 is it then, just been reading about that anyway and impressed me. Many thanks.

Never had any bother with AVG myself and I run it on a few computers - If you can shed any more light on this virus when you get details I am sure I and others will be grateful!

No idea where it came from them? Downloaded file? Email?

Ive gone with NOD32, cost me £24 but after todays events, im a firm believer in you get what you pay for, very impressed with it so far, like the way the AMON system checks every file as its used in real time for instant detection.

NOD32 > Kaspersky, tbh.

NOD32 is very light on system resources, perfect for low and medium end PCs. It even makes a difference on high end PCs. :p

Kaspersky, according to tests, is slightly the better of the two, and IIRC, the best in the world (Not sure where Symantec Corp 9 comes in though), with NOD32 close behind it.

Kaspersky is pretty light on resources compared to home Norton AVs, but still slows down PCs a lot compared to NOD32.

It depends how much you are willing to sacrifice for security, but for even the most security conscious, NOD32 is good. NOD32 is also very quick at scanning, something you might want to take into account as well. :)

Made the right choice - I think you will find a lot of people on here recommend and are very happy with Nod32 (myself included)

My Kaspersky setup is faster than NOD32 I have found :)

Like I've mentioned may times before, I'm a NOD32 and Kaspersky user and Kaspersky is by far the better product. NOD32 has good heuristics and light on system resources but thats about it. Its actually shocking at times the number of viruses NOD32 misses.

Kaspersky wins hands down and with Kaspersky 6 in beta at the minute and will be released some time soon so if you can hold out till then, then do so cause its really something special and NOD32 users will have to wait 6 months before they catch up.

this kaspersky 6 beta :) can you get onto the test now? are you allowed to reveal the changes and differences over 5?

A firewall has nothing to do with viruses so just to stop people pointing blame on windows firewall as part of the problem....

AVAST here and the most prblematic thing I ever get is tracking cookies fom some sites (ads) and nothing more, they're miinor guff though

The beta is available for testing and one can test if they wish by going to the Kaspersky forums. Details of changes are noted there also.

The key aspect of kav6 is the remarkable methods used to find and remove viruses and they have taken the malware etc scanning ability to a new level also.
