Hi,

Heres the exact problem:

Woke up and my PC had been on. My desktop image was now some tacky ''Warning Spyware Detected '' logo, and when i right clicked to properties - i didn't have ''settings'' to change it back to the default Windows XP wallpaper.

I ran spybot s&d / lavasoft adaware and AVG ( which i've always done on a weekly basis ) and found a few faults. I deleted / healed any problems and was then able to go into the right option and change back my desktop wallpaper.

Now the real problem;

I use firefox, although Internet Explorer is still available ( though i can't find it on add/remove programs ).

When i go onto either firefox or IE it's really slow. When i search on google the status bar at the bottom says '' waiting for web-analytics.google.co.uk '' and searching takes far longer than it used to.

When i search in google, for example ''BTYAHOO'' i get perfectly normal results, however, when i click any link on a google search, a new tab opens and i'm directed to a random spam site e.g. heavy.com ?

In general that's the problem, and firefox has gone RIDICULOUSLY slow all of a sudden.

Any tips, advice or ideas would be fantastic as i'm looking to sell my system soon and this needs rectifying :P

Well if it's not being picked up you would need to do another virus check with a different vendor - problem with that is if the trojan is clever enough it will hijack the new virus guard you put in. You could boot from a Virus Checker CD (google hirens perhaps?) and try that or try a system restore to when you know it was good. If you are doing the boot cd I would recommend leaving your PC off for 5 minutes before booting it (disconnect power cable) as some virus's can stay in ram - depends on how good / bad (depending on point of view) they are.

Personally wouldn't stick with AVG either but thats my personal opinion.

I've found superantispyware to be very good for removing the annoying viruses, just used it today after someone decided it would be a good idea to open a spam USA3000 e-ticket... Sigh. :(

Doesn't sound like you're completely clean.

This man also speaks much sense.

try this..

disable system restore
remove whatever av you've got now

run..

ccleaner slim
nod32 av trial
spybot s&d
adaware
avg antispyware (remove this after)

put firefox on with adblock plus and Easylist subscription (do this on your pc too)

shotgun blast approach, but usually works!

Agree with bledd & if that doesn't clear it just backup and format/reload Windows.

z0mbi3, i used to use filterset g, but the ABP creator said it's poorly optimized and not to use it (slows browsing down), but to use the ones that they suggest instead :)
