A freind had a virus/trojan kill security centre on windows xp, so he did a reinstall and its still disabled.

He cant find anything in the registry, whats the solution to this? could it have disabled a service or something?

If you go RUN-->services.msc its listed there, and you can set it to manual to have it start with windows.

Make sure he's updated to SP2, as security centre wasn't around before then.

did he do a proper reinstall? or did he do a "well it's good enough" reinstall? meaning installing windows on top of itself?

if he'd formatted, (barring the virus residing on another drive/partition) then it's extremely unlikely it would still be there now

yeah was going to say that

def a good idea to remove current partition then format it to install again, otherwise you get a 'dirty' install

Thanks for the help guys.

Yes he did a lazy reinstall ie over the top of the old windows. I new something about checking services as Minstadave kindly suggests. I told him he might be looking at a reformat.

Not sure if he has sp2 but im asuming so.
