Virus seems to be blocking access to security sites..

Almost all the free spyware/virus software vendors allow you to download their updates or full database signatures manually from their website (using another machine of course) without the need for the program to be installed for exactly the problem you describe, just copy the files over to the infected machine and your good to go :)

Hey guys, I am not sure If I have a virus, I never look at anything dodgy. AVG scanner is always on, firewall on, I use firefox and noscript. I checked my clock and there is no sign of any virus. There is also no sign of anything wrong in the system settings. I just can't load a lot of internet web pages, about 10 percent of sites work but then about 90 percent don't. Earlier today I was browsing some of the sites that I visit everyday and several hours later they just don't load. I tried IE and mozilla and nothing works. Getting to this site of course works, my internet speeds are fine. I don't get it,

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks in advance

Cleaning a pc for a friend, (only last week I gave it back to him, freshly formatted, but I didn't bother taking an image -why?!?!??)

he's managed to nail it, big time

the clock says 'VIRUS ALERT' next to the time in his user account, and no user accounts can access updates like spybot updates, or nod32 updates (they seem blocked)

where can i check? i've tried super antispyware, spybot, nod32, avg antispyware

but none of them can access their update pages. hjt log is clean.

hosts file is clean too, any ideas before I format?

Where can I find user accounts? I want to check if my comp says virus alert.

I have done a complete scan of both drives and there were no threats or errors with avg scanner.

Edit: Nevermind, I have found it now

Sorry, I have found the user accounts, but I don't see any clock in there, where is it? I just see the admin account which is the one I always use, then there is a guess account and it says guest account is off. Then there is another account called ASP.NET machine A.. limited account password protected

I don't ever remember creating any other accounts other than the admin account.

Edit: When I switch on the comp I am greeted by the welcome page and I only see one account the admin one

@dvdbunny - You see that "edit" button at the bottom of your posts? It enables you to add stuff to an existing post instead of creating multiple posts one after the other.

@ swinnie & Burnsy - why not burn the image to DVD and then restore to your HDD in case of emergency. Blank DVDs are ridiculously cheap these days.

Yeah, sorry I had been using the edit button on 2 of those last posts, but should have editing them all one post.

Edit: I cleared my internet cache but when I go into the URL to type a domain name in, it shows all the sites I have been visiting, how can I delete all this so the URL field is completely blank when typing a new url in? I am using mozilla firefox 3.0.2

Thanks in advance

just run through all the programs, they're a general 'fix all' for pc problems, ignore bits like the clock etc

Thanks for the replies

Do you I just disable the AVG scanner by right clicking disable where it is by the clock in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then I follow these steps

1. Disable system restore. (when I checked out my system settings system restore is already off)
2. Download and run combofix, preferably from safemode but ive used it in normal mode befpore with success http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
3. Post a Hijackthis log for us to look at http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/ this is not a program to download so I could forget about that and just use combofix

Is that all I need to do?

Sorry bledd,

I was looking for that and must have missed that post of yours. I had read the whole thread yesterday and was looking for the post quickly today and couldn't seen it, I must have been using the mouse scroll wheel too quickly.

I will follow those steps

Thank you very much

Hey bledd

How do I put firefox on with adblock plus and Easylist subscription?

I uninstalled avg and am about to start doing all those steps below, but cannot find where you downloaded them from. Also in that list of yours there is no mention of combofix, I thought I need this?

Edit: when I unistalled AVG that got rid of avg anti spyware, so I can't remove that after wards like you mentioned

If you already have FF installed, open up FF at the top click Bookmarks -> Mozilla Firefox -> Customize Firefox. At the top you should see ad-ons click on it and type adblock plus, dl and install.

When FF comes back on go -> Tools -> Adblock plus -> then click add filter subscription, then choose easylist.
