Well from the way my pc is acting, it's quite obvious I have a virus of some kind.
NOD32 isn't picking anything up and I can't open norton.

On startup I get a screen with a few characters and an okay button, thne when It loads it cannot open shortcuts and most programs don't open either (just displayed as "exe files" instead of programs)

I cant even use paint to do you some screenshots, incredibly frustrating.

What do you think would be the best way to go about irradicating this virus from my system baring in mind I have no idea what the hell it is, no idea where it came from and limited resources?

Running Xp sp2.
I have no idea how I got the virus, i'm running norton internet security 2006, nod 32, systemworks 06 and adaware. Plus I connect to the internet via a router.
I think it may have been the missus opening a dodgey email or one of my recent downloads (music mostly).

It seem's to be quite common now , I mean people having 2 anti-virus programs on their Pc's . God knows how many problems it causes ,I think people think of it in terms of "safer in numbers ".

Daaaaaaaaaft if you ask me !

Nortons real-time protection will still be running if you don't disable it.

You should never have two real-time antiviruses running at the same time.

Oh dear, thats really not good is it.
Well does anyone have any ideas?

Like where to start to find out what this is.
Will a system restore work?

ok this is what I'd do,

1st uninstall norton (you say you have NOD so just use that)
then download the following
ccleaner
Spybot S&D
adaware

update and run spybot and adaware
then run ccleaner to delete the rubbish

after for future protection get spyware blaster

thats basically what I use

P.s I dont know if a system restore will work as the virus may be hidden in there, so before running the AV disable that.

Dont use 2 anti-virus and use it -- it cause problems like clash each others, use one anti-virus and one anti-spyware then you will be ok, either NOD32 or Kaspersky are best buy - have review any softwares before you buy.

if you can uninstall Norton then - use as Admin log-in instead User log-in and try again if you can remove Norton - Admin Log-in you do is switch on PC and press F8 very quick and then select Safe-mode with networking and then log in and try remove it from Add/Remove (My Control Panel section).

Yes some time if i need to uninstall but dont use it for long - just short time. I usual select Safe-Mode with networking already done in Xp and Vista.

No I mean have you tried uninstalling Norton in safe mode (without networking) or running HJT in safe mode?

Try also renaming the hijackthis.exe to something else like hello.exe and see if it will run.

Some malware target HiJackThis specifically and close it when it runs.

theres a norton removing program to remove norton; as its a pain in  to remove when its damaged - google it...

I think you need to read the original post again, it isnt that Norton is being a pain to remove, it is the fact no apps will run cos of the virus he has on his system.

-also disable system restore first

give avg antispyware a run too, update it, do a full system scan, fix all, then uninstall

-can you get in to windows in safemode? (tap F8 after turning pc on) if you keep networking, internet will still work

I've never seen Norton and NOD32 conflict with each other before, but best not to use two anyway for performance reasons.

Nope no luck in safe mode, I think its pretty much destroyed my registry and all the file extension associations or something.
Can't run any fixes reg file, inf files, exes nothing.

Its a long shot but .............. I've had similar problem if all else fails last resort before a format , try booting in safe mode and then just deleting the the norton exe, I did this and it worked Norton seems to like running even though yo have disabled it. Norton can and does take over your pc annoying as hell
