I'm off to Amsterdam on Thursday and was wondering if I could use my Visa electron to pay for stuff out there? If I can how is the exchange rate worked out and is it the same rate if I took cash out there or would Halifax charge me more?

I'd get a proper VISA debit card if I were you. Electron isn't accepted in very many places, I didn't try mine abroad but I found it frustrating shopping on the net and such.

Worked fine for me when I was in barcelona a few weeks ago, just check they accept it. They'll also charge you for using it too.

The rate you will be paying will be the rate that VISA charge at the time that they process it. That is not the same as the rate on the day/time that you used the card.

VISA handling fees are normally near 2.75% + whatever exchange rate there is. Remember, to visa, this is the same as walking in and exchanging card cash over a counter, hense why they charge.

This is not your banks fault, and is not optional, but I do suggest you call your bank to find if there are any additional charges from them.

If you can tell me who you bank with, I should be able to give more acurate details :)

Yes you will be able to use it, but its not the most widely accepted card in the world. With a proper visa debit or credit card you would be sorted, but electron will probably do in most places.

I have had an electron card for years, but after 2 years of using it I got a mastercard as electron wasnt mainstream enough.

The card is with Halifax. I doubt I'll be able to get a new card in time and I don't really want to take all my money in cash.

I think my best bet would be to withdraw cash each day but do Visa charge for withdrawals as well?

Nope, but Halifax will.

If you dont want to pay charges, I suggest taking travellers cheques, or buy local currency before you go.

I thought there was a limit. Maybe to stop people taking suitcases of money abroad is my guess.

You can take as much cash on a plane as you like, as long as you dont exceed your weight allowance.

You can use visa debit cards anywhere in the world the same as a credit card. The fact its a debit card make no different. Visa electron cards (wtf is the point of them anyway?) are nearly uselss abroad, and pretty much a waste of time at home too.

For future reference, nationwide current accounts come with a visa debit card that has no fees for using abroad. They work off the current exchange rate only, you pay nothing else. Its cheaper than exchanging cash and much cheaper than using travellers cheques. Any visa ATM in the world will accept it.

my advice is swap the Electron for a Visa Debit asap.

i had one of those from LLoyds for a while and it caused me loads of grief.

A couple of months ago when i still had my Halifax visa electron card i used it in the gap store in new york. So if it works in a country that doesn't even issue visa electron cards, sure it will be ok in Holland. Be warned though they charge you £1.50 for each transaction you make.

I can use my Visa Electron in cash machines to make withdrawels in spain, afaik you can charge with it as well. Maestro works nice and easy..

I feel safer having both

You get charged no commission for using a Nationwide debit card abroad, they're the only people to do it, for future reference :p
