As mentioned in a previous thread, I am looking at buying into the Nikon DSLR system. Today I went to a store to have a play with a few different bodies.

I had a look at the D80 first. I thought it was quite robust, it fitted well in my hand but wasn't massively substantial. My GF has a D70, so it externally seems very similar, but I am aware it shares a lot of parts with the superior D200. A nice body all in all, the vertical grip would round it off nicely and the extra cash saved versus the D300 would go some way toward the lenses I want.

I then had a look at the D300. It could not be more different if it tried. It was immediately apparent that it was far more complex - I couldn't even work out how to set it in AP mode as the dial markings are non-standard. It feels very substantial however. I am sure it is very capable, but I must confess I thought that it might take me a week to work out what everything does! Very different from my old F90! :(

So, opinion time please...D80 and see how I go or D300 and jump in with both feet. The cost isn't really an issue, not that I am being blase about the difference you understand.

I had a look on the Nikonians Forum last night and saw some spectacular shots a guy had taken with a D70, so if the previous version is that good then the D80 and some great lenses ought to be quite capable.

Aargh the decisions! ;)

If cost really isn't an issue, then go with the D300. Don't expect the image quality to be noticable different, but as you have already discovered the build quality is better, and the AF system is much better. The basic camera system and controls aren't actually that complex. 10 minutes reading through the manual and you'll figure it out. However if getting the D300 means getting less or worse glass then seriously consider if you need the D300, and if the D80+better glass wouldn't be better.

Edit; To change it to AP mode you just have o hold down the 'mode' button next to the shutter, and move the rear wheel to cycle between the modes. ;)

It will also depend on the type of pictures you want to take. The D300 has the plus points of faster AF than the D80, plus there will be a noticable difference in quality from the D300 in pictures taken from iso 400 onwards. If you want to shoot sports or fast action, then this would be a big factor.

I have the D80 and it's a very good camera, I haven't tried a D300 yet so I cant comment on that.
