I'll be taking a trip to Amsterdam with a mate for three nights this May, and just looking for any ideas of what things to do. I havent booked a hotel as we are looking at staying at a hostel as we want to keep the costs down. Any ideas of where to stay and places to visit and eat at are most welcome.

There's the Artis Zoo, loads of stuff to see there.

Museums obviously.

Coffeeshops and RLD windows, trains are cheap and always on time so you could take a day out to Haarlem or Alkmaar (more red light areas, coffeeshops) etc.

I always go to Hotel83 these days as its cheap enough, not super nasty (ie you can take a shower and not end up more dirty than before you entered the shower). it is in the RLD but the rooms tend to be at the rear so no noise.

You will learn a lot about places to eat, see, do at another forum that I doubt I can link to on this site.

There are youtube guides to,

Hi i would advise staying close to the centre with the canal ring and then decide if your going to spend more time in the museum quarter or downtown and locare appropriately. I stayed opposite to the opera house! So walked literally everywhere but tried to plan our days up or downtown.

Butdget a lot of spends for waffles etc

I went there for 3 nights 2 weeks ago, stayed next to the Museums, just crossed the canal from the Apple Store. Good location, about 25mins from Anne Frank's house which by the way, BOOK before you turn up, we had to wait 3 hours.

There's plenty to do, do a walk round the Red Light District too for amusement, eat lots of lovely food and hire a bike for a ride round the city.

There's always the Heineken brewary

As said lots of.museums.
Going on a pedlo can be a laugh down the canals :p

I'd recommend a hotel rather than a hostel, I've stayed in hostels there twice and both times they were minging. One room between you both won't break the bank.

Last time I went, I stayed at the Meininger Hotel Amsterdam City West, which is one stop from central station. It was clean and a good mix of people staying there.

With regards at staying at hostels, is it best to book before hand or just turn up on the day. Ive been looking at a few online but they are all fully booked for the dates im going or they got some bad reviews from previous guests.

I stayed at the Flying Pig in the city, great location and was quite nice considering it was hostel. The sex museum on the main street is a must and was entertaining, the one in the red light district was a bit crap. Torture museum was interesting and I would recommend it but body world was absolutely fascinating.

If you want to stay at a hostel, hook The Flying Pig Downtown. Best hostel in Amsterdam.

Been to amsterdam 3 times, this is by far my fav hostel. Social and seems to have plenty of English speaking tourists pass through. A nice little chill-out smoking room to end the late evenings after going out. Just 2 minutes from the cafes and in the middle of the shopping area.

Anotehr good one is the 'Hart of Amsterdam' hotel. Bang in the middle of the RLD but in a touristy large 'street' (well replace the road of a normal street with a canal and its like that). A road or two over from the cafe places and next to the sort of restaurant roads. Place is super clean and facilities great. Very secure and biggest upside is its a movie theme hotel. Reception is like a cinema reception with each room belonging to a film... we got A Clockwork Orange :D My oh my, that was freaky coming in at god knows what hour after dropping truffles and seeing that giant eye backlit with orange, looking at you.

To be fair Amsterdam is not a sketchy place really. It is definitely no worse than many parts of London.
