I have 4Gb ram in my machine, so to use it all I need to use Vista 64 bit... Problem is I'm having tonnes of compatibility issues :( Half the programs I have run so far have just crashed for no reason!

I did have 32 bit installed until today, it worked perfectly no problems with any programs however I only get 2.75Gb of the RAM usable.

Anyone know if there is anyting I can do to make Vista 64 bit more usable... I'm in kinda a loose/loose situationg here....

What programs are you having problems with?

Have you made sure you've got the latest drivers for everything?

It's not really anything major but its annoying..

I have to unplug and plug in the bluetooth dongle for my keyboard and mouse on every bootup
The NVIDIA Monitor app crashes on run
The autostart app for my front panel crashes on run

All this worked perfectly in 32 bit.

Edit: All drivers are up to date I let Vista install it's defaults for everything and just installed the NVIDIA Forceware/nForce drivers and Logitech setpoint.

It looks I am going to have to go back to 32 bit, 64 bit clearly has issues, shame really as it seams faster than 32 bit.

i use vista 64bit and 32bit.

what its saying is correct, the 32bit only sees 3gb of memory and on systems it only sees 2.75gb..

i don't have any problems with the 64bit.

have u tryed reinstalling it?

I am considering it actually, I have spent a lot of time reading up on the differences between 64 bit and 32 bit Vista just to try and get an idea of what could be causing the problems. A few people have said that reinstalling has sorted problems because they installed a dodgy driver or something.

I'll have to give it go later, if things are still not working then back to 32 bit.

Thanks for the input :)

Well I reinstalled, removed 2Gb RAM to avoid the startup crash bug, reset everything to the BIOS to default for CPU/RAM etc so it couldn't possibly be anything else, first boot ran only the programs I was having issues with (no drivers) and the issues still exist... The problem is definately x64 compatibility so looks like I am back to 32bit and loose a gig of ram :(

I am having an issue not directly related to your Original post, but in a round about way I think it may help you. Or at least give it a try,

You'll need to bear with me, but hopefully you will see where i am going with this. Its to do with the boot loader comming with Vista.

In my case, I had XP and an RC2 version of Vista on the same drive, different partition. I wiped the RC2 a while back and used the drive for storage, resized partition etc.

I then bought Vista Ultimate a few days ago and couldnt get the dam thing to load properly during install. The one time I did, and god only knows how, it crashed continually. Basically because the Vista boot loader doesnt disappear when you format a Vista HDD, it still continues to be present on the system, especially in a dual boot situation.

I beguining to think your boot loader is mixing up your to installs of x64 and x86, letting you load x64 but casuing no end of problems.

Try a program called EasyBCD which is a small tool reset you boot loader sequence, it might not be a fix, but it wont do any harm either I would think.

Regards

Vic

It's an interesting idea, however I don't think this is the problem as I am using the full hard drive of the same drive each time. I think 64 bit just needs to mature a little, maybe SP1... I will use 32 bit for now and try it again when SP1 is available.
