Hi guys,

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I couldnt find an answer in the sticky thread, or via a forum search, so please excuse me if its one you're all bored to tears with.

There are 3 versions of Windows Vista - obviously, but what is the real difference between them? As a gamer who has nothing better to do than shoot stuff and web-browse - am I going to see a performance increase between the lowly Basic version that I have now and Ultimate?

What are the real benefits.

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

there's not a huge lot in it, google different versions of Vista and you will get a MS page with a list of the features.

Main differeances are Media Centre, ability to join a domain, Bit Locker, Backup features, Aero graphics.

I have ultimate 64 on desktop and Home premium 32 on laptop, for me ultimate has nothing I need over and above Home Premium.

Home Premium is the enthusiasts OS of choice. Ultimate is pointless.

Just wondering if there is any reason it is the Enthusiasts OS of choice, other than the price? I know its the one i have, but that was because it was cheaper than Ultimate, just wondered if there is any other reason choose it.

Ultimate lets you faff around with group policy, bitlocker drive encryption and other enterprise stuff and, of course, lets you join a domain and so on. The "Ultimate Extras" are not worth it, it's the business stuff that adds value.

Why not just buy Vista Business? Well because Business doesn't come with any of the "Home" stuff - Media Centre for example.

I use Home Premium.

The "Ultimate Extras" are not worth it,
what extra's they've been useless

I've got x64 ultimate, personally I wouldn't go any less than this as the built in backup software is actually pretty good and I no longer use acronis to restore my os etc, it also can restore straight from the install screen which is nice and simple :)

Media center is actually useful now that haali has finally released a 64bit mkv splitter so that you don't have to faf around with languages etc.

Never used bitlocker but its there if I want it.

I have Business from my unis MSDN:AA, but if I had to buy a copy, it would be between Business and Home Prem. Probably go with Buss personaly because I do a lot of faffing around with domains and corporate network stuff.

The backup utility is pretty good.

I have home prem and havent used anything else since i got it, but i would say if you need to ask what version you need then you wont need the extera features in ulimate. So in my opinion Home premium will be enougth.

It'll be Ultimate soon as HP64 only supports 16GB ram, where as MS capped Ultimate at 128GB. Especially with i7 gearing up for 6x4GB ram solutions.

there was a link one here just 2-3 days ago allowing vista 32bit users too upgrade too 64bit for like 7 quid anyone seen it ?

I thought that all vista key's worked on both 32 and 64bit versions of the OS?

i.e. buy home premium 32bit, your cd key also works on home premium 64bit?

You're not paying to transfer your license from 32-bit to 64-bit. It's the media that is costing the money which is around £7.
