Vista 64, what's compatibility like generally with applications...

...so if I move to Vista 64bit (from XP 32bit) what sort of experience can I expect to have with applications generally?

I'm used to everything installing/running fine, and my one experience of Vista so far was installing a Cadcam program on a neighbours Vista laptop and it refusing to run


Will for example Office XP/2004 install on it (32bit)?

generally everything will work, apart from any 16 bit apps/games. and maybe the odd driver for old devices.
If you use anything which isn't mainstream, like that cad app, just check first.

EDIT: I think you need a patch for office 2004? Or at least you used to.

I'll look into Office 2007, as long as I can turn of the stupid dog and paper clip!

There is no paper clip. And the Dog was the search assistant on XP. I believe the dog has been retired.

I installed vista 64 last week dual booting with vista 32. Have to say i havent had any problems at all running all my usual stuff

I've not found any apps that don't work correctly with Vista 64 yet.

Pretty much everything works fine for me. The only thing I had issues with was my scanner, which is fairlyold now anyway.

Drexel, there is a program that seems to work with every scanner, look for 'scanner' on here and there'll be a link to it, uses some generic twain driver to talk to the scanners i think

The only problem I have had so far is Command and Conquer 3... But I can still use my laptop for that

Vista compatability is pretty seamless.

However, I have experienced a few driver incompatibilities, mainly with printers and scanners, so it's best to check the manufacturers website for updated drivers before you buy. On all occassions, my clients prefered to stick with Vista and buy new Peripherals. Same goes for any software, sometimes just a patch or update is needed and these are normally free.

Adobe Photo Elements constantly stops working, but often resumes again, when using Vista 64. This does not happen and it works perfectly fine in XP64.

In the notes it states...

• Vista 64: There is some flickering and screen delay (2 or 3 seconds) when switching between images in the Quick Fix mode on Vista 64.

for me it is more like the application stops working, burps a few times and then starts up again.

That is encouraging. I will remove it and reinstall the application, maybe it will help..?
