Vista 64, what's compatibility like generally with applications...

99% of apps will run on Vista64 or XP64

The 1% will be 32BVit specific and I think you will more often than not find, that there will a 64Bit specific version of that.

I have been running XP64 since its launch and there is absolutely NOTHING that wont run in XP64 that does not have a 64Bit equivalent or alternative ( Thankfully the alternative has always turned out to be superior anyway ) and Vista64 is no different.

They can't be 16bit because its not possible to run 16bit code on a 64 bit os.

Checked the empires2.exe for AoEII, and it does have a version tab, so it's probably 32 bit. However, I came across that when quickly checking compatibility for Fallout, which doesn't have the version tab. I also came across a forum link where Fallout was working in Vista 64 (http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2067). So it looks like compatibilty might be a bit pot luck.

So general opinion is it would daft not to go Vista 64 bit, in preference to Vista 32 bit on a fresh install...

I've got Fallout working under Vista Home Premium 64-bit. There's a work-around floating about on the net.

The only thing I've had problems with is Creative's crappy drivers.

I had no problems, been using it for 4 months or so now. Only thing I couldn't get to run first time was CoD2, but I just ran it in compatability mode. Max Payne 1 doesn't work atall, tried loads of times to get it to work.

Only really old 3rd party applications like the odd CD mount program or audio converter doesn't work for me. Everything else works fine.
