Hi,

thinking of getting a vista and would like to know if this academic version is a 64bit or 32bit?
read somewhere that this retail ones are 32bit and for 64bit i'd have to contact microsoft and they would sent me 64bit for extra charge.

Also when/if i get it i want to install it on separate HDD than my xp. Is it possible and will "dual boot" that vista got work fine?

My system is
E2180 @ 3000, Asus P5KC, 2 gig OCZ platinum rev 2 (got another 2 gig 5300 in the box so maybe i'd mix it to use 4gig), 8800gt 512MB etc...

Thanks a lot.

32 bit and then you send away for the 64 bit media.

As far as I'm aware, academic retail versions are upgrade only (correct me if I'm wrong) so unless you have 2 XP licences you couldn't dual boot.

Yeah it's upgrade. It says i could use it for clean install, even if not i thought i could install my xp again then upgrade it. Don't realy see why i should need 2 xp licences. Paid for my XP, paid for Vista so why shouldn't i be aloved to have xp and vista installed? :S

For my other question can xp and vista be installed on 2 disks or it has to be one and each of the system on its own partition?

Cheers.

The upgrade requires a qualifying product to be valid. Therefore your XP licence is still in use to be able to use the Vista licence. If you then want another XP install (to dual boot) you then require another licence.

It can be installed on separete paritions or HDDs. What ever you want really :)

you get a huge discount off vista because you paid for an XP license before it, and the Vista upgrade license means you can't use the XP one anymore (unless you get rid of vista)

If you don't like it, either buy another copy of XP or become a software pirate, but if you're going to do that, why bother paying for vista at all.

Also, if you only have OEM XP, you'll need to buy a new copy of vista if you upgrade your motherboard.

Thanks, bit disapointed with the fact that i'd need another xp licence, still it would prolly be cheaper than getting a retail vista.

32 bit and then you send away for the 64 bit media.

So lets say i pick up 32bit retail version how much is this "upgrade" to 64?

About the OEM versions am i right thinking that i can reinstal them as long as its same mobo? Or once installed thats it? My xp back up image doesnt seem to need reactivating when restored so could this be "way round it"?

i've just built my system and hopefully won't have to upgrade my mobo for bout 2 years so OEM could work for me...

Cheers.

 my mate just rang them up, explianed that his m'board died and had been replaced and they re-activated it

Yes - a warranty swap of a motherboard is permitted.
This is the ONLY time a motherboard swap is allowed under the OEM license.

A general upgrade or your motherboard fails outside of warranty (so you have to buy a new one) and the license is no longer valid.

You can get the academic version for bout £70 all incl. Just look for it. ;)

Hmm i think i'll try to find the cheapest retail version i can.

Thanks a lot.

Sorry bout that, but on other hand don't think i've seen academic version on OCuk so its not realy mentioning competition if its not catered for here. =D

I can't see why you can't have a duel booting system using your xp license and vista. You can't really run them at the same time, so you are not breaking any rules.

I have the academic version, and it doesn't even ask for xp disk when installing.

FYI, i bought the educational licence. It took Microsoft about 3 weeks to send me the 64 bit disc.

Yes you are. It's not concurrent usage that counts, its installations.

You maybe right matey, but I bet there's a lot of users running duel boot systems in this way. I'm sure most people will move over to vista in the future, but I can't see Microsoft being bothered about this as along as you have purchased the product.
