windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Basically says to enter vista cd and go through repair process.

Says im mising the winload.exe file - the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

Anyway, entered the vista cd and went through the repair process. Finally got through to my desktop after ages of waiting. Anyway thought i better check it can restart again without the cd. So i do this, it shuts down and then on restart up comes the same error message.

I have installed a new hdd recently but have restarted many times after installation.

The last thing i did before it was working was install vista updates.

Any suggestions?

This may seem extreme but what could be causing your error is your Bootmanager and Pagefile.
First try the following go into explorer and select show all hidden files.
rename Bootmgr to something like "oldboot". Reboot and insert your Vista DVD and perform a Boot repair.
Remeber you are not deleting the bootmanager just renaming it. But after a reboot and when your system reboots if you look at Drive C: you will see a new Bootmgr as well as your old file "oldboot". Next if that doesn't work try the same with Pagefile.sys, because this can cause more problems than it is worth sometimes. This will take longer to reboot because it will have recalculate your system size and ram buffer upon reinstallation from the Vista DVD.
If the worse comes to the worst you will have to restart by holding down the F8 key and select Debugging mode and sumbit your diagnostic data to MS for a fix. Usually problems occur like this when there is a change in memory size. in your case the memory being the Pagefile access area of the Harddisk. I know when I changed HD's on XP I either deleted my old pagefile or instead of the old attitude of letting windows handle my pagefile was changed to "no let me change it manually". This was enough to deter trojans and such like because I had control over the pagefile. There is an option to disable it in Vista and in your case I would advise this until you get controll over your system again. This will slow down the system slightly but at least you should be up and running again.
I hope this information has been helpful to you.
