Vista Defrag

I'm using SmartDefrag. Anyone ever used this one? It seems to be very good, though I've recently started to doubt wether it actually "does" anything...

Thanks. I downloaded that one last night and it took about an hour to defrag the drive, pretty good, especially the visual representation :)

I've left the vista one running for 10+ hours with no end in sight, just wonder what it's actually doing.

As far as I know Vista defrag runs as a very low priority process and is designed to run unnoticed in the background. I assume this program completes the defrag in the fastest time possible, which is why you're seeing a massive difference.

I dont think thats it (entirely): I run the Auslogics defrag, it does it in about an hour, then I run it again after, it takes about 2 minutes because the drive is already defragged. Then I ran the vista Defrag and left it for 2 hours still defragging, it's doing something because the drive is chugging away.

vista took 5.45 hour to defrag my drive

90GB of 300GB on 10,000 raptor.

in resource manager hd activity was 1mbps lol :D

As has been said, the Vista defrag does seem to run at a lower priority...

I'm on an old PC using Vista and i've defragging while browsing the forum, if i had done that with O&O for example (used it on previous install) i would have noticed. Havn't noticed any lag running the Vista one while going about my bits....

Diskeeper and O&O get my vote if you're wanting a recommend though....

O&O Pro 11 all the way.

It live monitoring system is fantastic. Never have to defrag my HD in one go now as any file that fragments is now defragged almost straight away.

Just got Vista 64...Is there any great defrag out there? I used to have Diskeeper on my XP hard drive, it defragged when fragmations occured. Appeared to do a great job - might just go with that again or is there anything similar?

Lots of defragmenters rearrange files on the drive as well as defragmenting them (hard drives are fastest at the beginning of the volume, on the outside edge of the disk, so that's where you want your most important files like the OS). Different defraggers will have different ideas about the order, which is why one defragger can take ages even if you run it straight after another.

I've tried all the free ones and I was less than impressed.

I've tried 3 'real' ones, Diskeeper, Perfect Disk & O&O Pro. Of the 3 I have found O&O to be just as good as Diskeeper but much cheaper and Perfect Disk a poor 3rd choice. So it looks like I'll buy the O&O licence when the trial runs out on Thursday.
