I've had similar experiences, although at least with the Vista defrag, the hard disk still seems to be crackling and the HD activity light flashes, so it's doing something...

there is a 64bit version of diskeeper pro
im using it on my laptop with vista 64 bit
 
I vote for Diskeeper '08/'09 Pro on Vista- fully automatic and fast as well.
When choosing a defragger for Vista, try to pick one that supports shadow copy friendly defrag. Your restore points will remain safe.
 
Correct me if i'm wrong guys, but, when you get to say, 1TB hard drive on vista.. The software which comes with vista cannot handle that size defrag, it will just run forever without completing, or so i have read, perhaps this was fixed in a patch?

just used that myself D/L it from majorgeeks as i left vista to defrag on my work pc (q9550 8gb ram , Raid Seagate 11 500gb , radeon 4870 512mb so not like its slow )on firday afternoon still was at it when i got in this morning

this program finished is 90mins which not to bad

Haven't tried Diskeeper for a long time because, as a company, Diskeeper Corporation are barking mad. And Perfectdisk/OO/Ultimatedefrag are as good if not better.

Diskeeper's run by some right loonies, and it's not much better than the windows built in one, as it's essentially the same program.
 
Actually the Vista inbuilt defragger is a completely in-house coded design, unlike the one which shipped with XP and 2K, which was indeed a cut-down version of Diskeeper. It often gets criticized for being a bit, errr, minimalist, but I think that was the intention - defragging and other housekeeping processes are supposed to happen automatically behind the scenes with little or no active involvement from the end user.

From a real-world performance viewpoint, I've never seen any convincing reason to install a third-party defragger on Vista, which seems to resist fragmentation much better anyway than previous NT-based platforms. Still, if you like seeing pretty pictures of coloured blocks being shuffled around, by all means go for it, and if you buy Diskeeper you can sleep safe in the knowledge that you're helping keep those pesky thetans under control... :D
 
I hate stuff happening 'automatically in the background', indexing, defragging, backups, virus scans, updates, christknowswhat... usually happens when you need maximum performance for something else.

The whole point of the new super-low priority that vista runs these services under is that it doesn't matter if they DO start while something else intensive is running, they just don't get any resource time.

Perhaps, but it defrags much faster, it defrags 6 hdd's at once without moaning, and it has a progress bar and a nice graph...
 
Given MS and Sun now being slightly more friendly I'm surprised they haven't licensed ZFS for Windows yet. NTFS is getting crusty,

And Perfect Disk was always OK for me when I used XP.
 
I'm puzzled as to why it takes some people's Vista defragger many hours to defrag relatively small HDD's?

I defragged a well-used 1TB drive in a couple of hours with it at the Weekend :confused:
