is it true you need retail if you change your system and want to install vista again?

if so, OEM = complete crap, i am disappointed.. why should i pay over 250 or 300 or whatever it is for a bloody OS? terrible price.

You'll pay £30 for a game that you'll use for a few weeks/months.

You'll use this every day for everything for years. Think about it.

I do agree that OEM should let you transfer it to others however, just disagree that it's such a ridiculous price.

Apple do the same for £60, so it is a ridiculous price...

No Apple just have very good value :)

If you actually think of the amount you use it compared to a game (sort of a standard on price) it's about right. If anything Windows is good value compared to the average game life.

I haven't been keeping up with the the vista threads on here but I just took a look at the price and they aren't that much more then the xp's. Vista ultimate 64 OEM for 135 quid isn't bad imo. But if you are changing your computer a lot then retail seems priceworthy, otherwise it does seem a bit much.

Whichever one you need :\

Really don't buy an OS without reading about it and its different versions first!
well id rather buy ultimate if the difference is like from xp home to pro. By that i mean if vista home you can use the key like 5 times before they say u have activated too many times and need to phone blah blah.. id rather buy ultimate just for that reason.

Um, "huh"? Activation is exactly the same on all of the versions. Even if it wasn't, you really want to pay more just to avoid a free 2 minute phone call?

Well I just ordered a new PC should get it on thursday, no upgrade planned for the next 3 years.

should I go for OEM (Edited)?

So basically, in a nutshell, the bottom line......

If i wanted to buy the OEM version, i can never change my rig? :o

yeah kind of, ******** to vista i say :D

gonna keep my xp copy for another year at least, when crysis is out i'll be getting it.

Oh well, get what you pay for i guess :D

I mean i have no intentions of upgrading my PC ever again, my last upgrade was just that, the last.....Far too costly for all i use my PC for now, basically a media centre with the odd bit of gaming.....XBox 360 is where my gaming is at now! ;)

It's just, if something broke within my rig and you need to replace it......Your Vista is screwed.....Bah! :o

/edit - ok it goes for just the Mobo.....suits me.....OEM it is

with xp oem you can put it on a new system, sometimes it will activate others it won't, if it doesnt use the toll free number to ring them, then say you put a new gcard in or updated all your drivers and they will then read off that big code and your activated.

i rekon vista will be the same

do the maths oem = £80 retail = £220 how many changes of motherboard are you going to do before the next os comes around.

Personally I think oem is a bargain with the plus that it may work after an upgrade. I would only use it on a brand new motherboard that I was intending to upgrade the cpu etc on.

that other thread has seriously disappeared up where the sun dont shine :D :D

I'm not sure what's in the pipline at the moment technology wise but from what I can see we're at a good point for OEM.

If you invest in one of the new 680i, C2D or even AM2 socket motherboards at the moment I think you're probably covered for not having to upgrade your motherboard for at least 3 years or so (unless you're one of the compulsive upgrady types :) )

For someone with a new M/B at the moment I reckon OEM is a bargin if you REALLY want Ultimate.

Personaly I still think Home Premium retail upgrade is the way to go so you're covered for most all eventualities for the next 5 years. I'm really not convinced a home user needs ultimate.

Looks like Burnsy had made a start on digging out the FAQ and editing the first post when he had to "take a break"... ahem.

Once he's back the first post in the thread should have all the QAs anyone needs.
