Hi,

Just built a new Vista based system, but im having problems when copying files from a CD to the Hard drive. It does the time calculation and begins copying but half way through it just stops and hangs. Tried different DVD Drives, Different CD's, copying different files, it always just hangs!

Any thoughts?

Will post full spec if needed.
Intel Core 2 Duo, Gigabyte 965P-DS3, 1Gb Ram

RESOLVED ISSUE : SOLUTION WAS TO RESET BIOS AND DELETE DRIVE FROM DEVICE MANAGER, LET WINDOWS REBOOT AND REFIND THINGS. NOT SURE WHY, BUT THIS IS WORTH A TRY INCASE YOU ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM.

windows defender checking every file (and possibly av if you use one)

go into the windows defender options, and disable real-time file scanning, if it looks like its 'hanging' just leave it, 95% of the time, its just explorer waiting for things to happen, ms should use a more serious egg timer.. :)

CD's are fine as they work in other machines, and no AV has been installed on it (yet!)

Disabled windows defender real time scanning but same issue still arises, any other thoughts or is this just vista for now?

swap ide cable?

-check the IDE controller settings in the device manager

does it copy ok from C: to C: ? (same drive)

Just tried it with a USB DVD drive, and still the same problem. It stops in random places as well, not just with one specific file.

C:\ to C:\ works without problem.

dont know what to suggest mate, only used vista for about 30 hours tops, does it fully crash? or just slow down? -what transfer rate does it give you..

Get a reasonable transfer to start with, off a CDR its like 2megs a second for photo files. It slows right down to a stop, and the green bar goes red and it hangs! Reboot time!

Am not impressed with the Vista experience so far, unless this is solved is back to Windows XP :(
