The engineers over at ASRock have released some updated BIOSes for some of their recent mobos that allow super-fast booting of Vista...

ASRock said:
Instant Boot can be enabled on five of ASRock’s current boards, which are based on AMD’s 780G and 790GX chipsets, and Intel’s P45 and P43 chipsets, and you can grab the appropriate BIOS updates from here. ASRock has also released a hilariously cheesy video to demonstrate the feature in action, which looks as though it was shot in the motherboard factory. Check it out below.

Full post here along with video of it in action with "Hugo", "George" and another guy...

Anyone with a suitable ASRock mobo wanna test this out and share their experiences? :)

Now there's a name I haven't seen in a while...

On topic - how does it work exactly? How can it be like a fresh boot?

I would love that feature, on a side note why haven't other motherboard manufacturers started offering this, if all it needs is a bios update?

No, they claim it's effectively a fresh start-up so they won't be "garbage" from the previous use.

As it shows in the video "Keep AC Power On" Ie. it just puts the computer into a low power form of sleep, it prob just cuts the power to parts not needed cpu/gfx/dvd drive until they're needed at which point it will just power them back on, and with the hdd still on and ram it's able to boot from scratch.

hmm.. sounds similar to the asus thingy i was reading in the P5Q manual last night.

AI sleep or something its called, just turns the CPU /HDD off and runs everything on minimal power.

Then again, isnt there a power saving feature in any Windows that allows you to turn HDDs and the like off after a time AFK?

Edit: Maybe not the same if it boots in 4 secs from a 'shutdown'...

Hmm..

Note: in the video no boot screen was shown for the instant boot, now even SSD have to show the loading bar, so I'm going to say that it was just put into sleep mode...

Read the content carefully, only the normal mode 'Quick Boot' gives a clean boot, whatever that is. The one in the video is some sort of sleep mode, but my laptop takes a bit longer than 4 secs to recover from sleep mode!

indeed this is some form of 'sleep' as people have noticed, it says "do not remove power"

Nice to see they are looking at ways to get boot times down though, however i really dont think this is it!

well in fast mode, when it shuts down everything goes off, fans etc..

one thing im not quite understanding:

when i activate instant boot, i shutdown, then the system shutsdown but a screen comes (at boot up) saying it needs to boot up once then shutdown before i can use instant boot

so essentially, im using my pc, i want to enable instant boot

the pc has to restart and load windows then shutdown
then when i press the power on, the pc comes in using instant boot

im sure i have to do this cycle everytime, which is silly

unless im doing something wrong or its not liking windows 7?

any ideas? anyone using this feature?

i dont really turn the pc off but i just wanted to try the feature out :p

Well that's obvious isn't it, that's how it's a 'clean boot'. It shutsdown wiping the memory, then it restarts the computer puting it into a usable mode and then puts it to sleep, so when you go to start up your computer the next time it's ready to go in a matter of second.

this is a stupid 'feature'

sleep mode pwns it and if you have a fresh boot, it nukes your superfetch data..

lose/lose situation!
