Vista memory usage at boot?

Hi.

I've noticed when I first boot up and load into Windows, every time my memory usage is around 50%, and after about 3 mins (same time as it takes for the HDD Activity light to go off) the memory usage returns to it's norm of about 30-33%.

Why does this happen?

Thanks
Willz.

Does your main PC have superfetch disabled? Does this actually help much?

Instead of making another thread, I'll post this in here:

Any idea what these unknown devices could be from these numbers?:

Prefetch is enabled on mine, yes.

Prefetch does make a difference, especially after your PC has been idle for a while as it'll pre-load your favourite applications when idle :)

I would guess the first one is related to the motherboard and its power system (ACPI Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) possibly something went wrong during install and the drivers were not installed correctly. Make sure you have the latest from the chipset manufacturer. 2nd one looks related to your Video card, again ensure yu have the latest drivers. I would also recommend getting an Antivirus program.

I do not disable superfetch, why would I when it saves loading times?

It's normal for Vista to actually use your ram unlike other Windows versions. This is nothing to fuss about.

This is no longer the early 2000s where ram usage was "optimised" by people daily...loll.

I don't think he complaining about memory usage, I think most people have come to terms with Vista and memory usage by now.

I think it's more the fact that it's a bit weird how Vista uses 50%+ on bootup and then slowly releases memory until it's down to 350-400mb

My Vista on my other PC uses 700mb+ (70%) on startup, then releases all the way to 480mb.

atk0110 is some power managment thing which requires no driver, theres a dummy driver for it but its harmelss to not use it, the other one, i dont know

You're lucky, my laptop consumed 1.6GB and didn't change. stripped Vista off and put XP on.

hmm mine uses 700-900 constantly even with several days up - does not feel slow at all though which is why I like Vista so much :)

Yep i re installed vista last week after 8 months of usage, the fresh install was no more responsive than the 8 months old install.

I booted into Windows Vista today and my memory usage was 25%, not bad considering XP's is 19-21%.

I followed this guide and it's certainly made my PC in Vista more responsive :)

Another question, will my PC run better or pagefile work better if I move it onto my other hdd, I have my WDC320GB HDD, this is for Windows Vista and programs, then I have my 160GB Samsung IDE drive, this is for storage, and one partition of 6GB that can be for possible pagefile usage, would it be ok to move the pagefile to this partition and will it have any benefits.

Currently the pagefile size is:
16mb minimum
3067mb Recommended
2345mb Currently allocated

Would it be best to change the currently allocated to 5000mb and minimum of 1024mb?

Move the page file on to a separate hard drive if you have one, otherwise leave it where it is as it won't make a difference moving it to a different partition.

I always set page files to 1.5* the amount of ram for both minimum and max.

Yea, I meant, moving it to one of my partitions on my other 160GB IDE hdd.

I have 2gb of ram, so what should I set it to? the same as it was before?:
16mb minimum
3067mb Recommended
2345mb Currently allocated

Or something bigger?
