Vista mouse movement is different to XP?

Am I imagining things or is the mouse acceleration in Vista markedly different to in XP? I was using Vista on my machine earlier, with the mouse speed slider set to the same position I have it in XP - one notch from the far right - and I just can't get used to it.

Have MS changed the behaviour or am I going nuts.

It tends to get changed with every InteliPoint driver to be honest. It's never really been an exact science and I tend to customise my settings for each PC and mouse seperately.

PITA unfortunately.

Give the settings some more tweaks and I'm sure you'll find the happy zone. Don't let a small thing like that ruin your Vista SP1 experience

It seems to be similar to how it works in OS X - and I don't mean that as a compliment! ie. the distance the pointer moves varies depending on how fast you move the mouse. In XP, if I move the mouse half the width of the mouse mat, the pointer moves the full width of the screen - whether I do it very slowly, or in one quick movement. That's how I like it.

I'm just using a basic Dell USB mouse btw.

It seems to me that unchecking the "enable enhanced precision" (or similar) box beneath the slider completely disables acceleration on Vista, giving you the nice linear movement. I don't think this was the case on XP.

Edit - Nathan - Having tested myself, I don't think step 2 of that guide is required (I'm using a MS mouse with no additional drivers)

Agreed I doubt step 2 is required. Seems that "Enhance pointer precision" simply means "Degrade pointer precision by interpolating various curve graphs with my actual inputs and therefore ruin my nice precise optical mouse"

Just tried it, not sure if it's better that way or not :) I'll need to play with it more. In XP I do have the pointer precision box ticked, but the movement is fine and intuitive.

You must have disabled mouse acceleration in XP then, out of the box both XP and Vista will vary the distance the mouse travels based on how quick it moves as well as how far. Maybe you applied a registry patch that was floating around in the early days of XP that a lot of CS players used?

I reinstalled XP only a few months ago (after HDD failure) and I'm quite sure I didn't do anything like that. According to some googling, the pointer movement behaviour has been altered in Vista - though I don't know if that is gospel. It isn't drastically different to XP (like OS X) so it's hard to put my finger on it - I have to reboot each time to compare the differences as I'm dual booting.
