The network icon flashes occasionally, but it bears little or no resemblance to actual network activity, which in this case is between the NIC and router. I have tried it with 'activity animation' on and off, and it makes no discernible difference. What am I doing wrong?

With it on, the screens flash to highlight communication, with it off they stay blank. Just tried it, you may need a magnifying glass to notice it though :D

I notice them flashing, but not as they should be doing. ie. downloading solidly should result in one/both of the lights being on permanently while it is happening, but it doesn't :)

I have to say as well, it isn't very clear compared to XP's network activity icon is it? The on and off colours are too close together. Dark blue and slightly less dark blue - whose bright idea was that?

It's not just me then :) That's good to know at least. Hopefully MS will fix it. I should qualify this by saying that I have only used Vista RC2, and it might be fixed in the final version for all I know.

Unfortunately it's not fixed.

Basically all it's doing is when ever there is network activity, it runs a standard animation, unlike the XP or previous ones, where it shows actual up/down activity.
