At home of course :p
On my Gigabit network, trying to transfer a 40Gb folder from my Vista PC to my XP PC (this is over the network using \\computername\share), and after half an hour, Vista is still half way through.

So i cancel it, install FTP server software onto the XP PC (Filezilla server - great program), and then use a FTP client on my Vista PC to transfer exactly the same folder. Result is 58Mb a second :D

So, Vista is the biggest piece of junk ever when it comes to transfering files over the network. My advise, instead of putting a network share on your file server, install ftp server software to it instead if you'll be transfering files onto it from a Vista machine.

To be fair I've had similar issues in the past with my gigabit network just in XP. If I kept an eye on the switch activity it'd be very bursty - so the activity lights would go mental for a couple of seconds then stop for a couple of seconds and so on. It was always fine via FTP. Much as I dislike Vista I'd say this isn't totally Vista's fault since it does happen in XP also :) Unfortunately I don't know what causes it.

Mbit or MegaByte? I assuming MB in which case fair enough, but if it were Mbit then the FTP is actually slower.

Yeah he'll mean MB. Getting 58mbit/sec out of even a 100mbit network would be pretty dire, let alone gigabit :)

wasc this is an issue microshaft are working on as we speak hopefully as my work laptop is gash when transferring across databases etc.

Yep I always tended to use FTP for transferring files when I had a LAN (10mbit hub - yuck!). Just seemed to be more efficient than windows network shares even XP<->XP, never mind Vista.

58meg/sec is around the average transfer rate for most harddrives which is probably the limiting factor when using gigabit lan.

This is one of the main reasons i am back on XP my home LAN suffered with VISTA not to mention video drivers and random crashes, back on XP and solid as a rock and my LAN is fast again ;)

I was transferring about 35GB from Vista Home Premium to an XP home pc Via 54g wireless and the network monitor in Vista was showing 50% usage but was only transferring at 2.5MB/Sec  I think I'll install FTP on both ;).

Hmmm, my XP to XP speed seems very low on my wireless network, so considering this topic, it might be worth trying out FTP transfer, I always thought it seemed very very slow (less than 1 MBps a lot of the time, even when connected at '54MBps'). What software do you recommend for using as an FTP server in XP on my portable harddrives connected machine?

I have FTP client software I can use.

Not trying to drag this O/T but why the hell is transferring files between computers on Windows Messenger so goddamn slow? Is it something to do with ports on each computer?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but networking is something i am trying to figure out becuase i am having lots of problems with my computer and laptop and i am constantly having to transfer my files from one computer to the other to format (even with seperate partitions)

My Desktop has a Marvell Gigabit Network Card, and the laptop also has one in built, but i dont think its a Gigabit one. Anyhow, at the moment i am running them both into my Be* box using automatic settings and the same workgroup and have shared the partition that contains all of my data on both computers. In network places, they can be seen but transfering about 35Gb takes over an hour and even longer if either computer has anything running. Both are running the same version of XP home with all updates.

I've never bothered using FTP software before, but would this make it faster for me to transfer this data? It feels like the way i am doing it isnt the most effective way, and takes up so much time to complete. If not, where does the problem lie? Is it the Be* box because i have tried just using a short crossover cable and it isnt any faster. Could it be the 4800rpm (or whatever laptop speeds are) hard drive that is in the laptop? Mine is a 7200rpm 10k one so its pretty decent enough, and the laptop has 1gb of ram and a 3500+ AMD64.

Sorry for the long post, it just saves me creating a new thread about ftp software when there already is one.

Thanks. :)

No it isn't.
This is an issue that "Microsoft" are working on.
There has been at least one tweak released to the public which should help - SP1 should totally fix the issue.

I felt I should fix your spelling mistake least you sound like a 12 year old - which I assume you didn't want to sound like?

Seems i am not the only one who doesnt like people who call microsoft, microshaft and other 'kiddie' names.

If I try and apply KB931770-x86.msu it says "The update does not apply for your system"

HEADRAT

you're running vista x64 iirc

the hotfix listed for x86 systems. Maybe try googling and see if theres a 64bit version ?
