is Windows Vista Home Basic still 32bit? ( no aero glass)
that means you wont see your 4gb of ram
and also be limited to under 2terrabyte of storage

For me the whole 32-64 bit thing is still a blur. I mean u buy a copy of ultimate say, although i know all versions are on the dvd, and u boot from dvd to install it, Does it then ask if you want 32 or 64, or if you have 64bit cpu thats what you get no option?

This may be cleared up soon in say RC2 or future releases when instead of 2 verions avalable there may only be an .iso of the disc itself, but fornow i have not yet heard how this will work

no you wont get 32 bit and 64 bit together
its either Vista Home Basic 32 the rest are all 64 bit

Vista Home Basic aimed @ laptops and pentium 4's

Vista Home Basic will not support the new Aero user interface.
Doesn't bother me. In fact, I'm using classic interface in Windows XP. Using Aero interface will kill system resources more than standard XP interface.

By the way, Aero isn't what we're after in Vista?

Let keep it sweet and short:

Windows Vista Home Basic - similar to Windows XP home - £154.99

Windows Vista Home Premium - Windows Media Center - £184.99

Windows Vista Business - Windows XP Pro - £250.00

Windows Vista Ultimate - Windows XP Pro + Media Center in one - £325.00

Vista Home Basic would be fine for me but I might need Remote Desktop so Vista Business could be for me. Either that or XP Pro.

Vista Ultimate is the "no compromises" version of Windows Vista. It provides the best performance............most secure.........and complete connection to the office, and is optimized for the individual. Everything you need for work or fun is included. It is the best operating system ever offered for the personal PC.
Laughable! What do we get with lower versions?

I don't think theres any point in upgrading unless you get the ultimate, after all that is what vista is about. Combining everything into one nice tidy system..

To be honest I'm going to wait till I can completely transport my system to Windows XP 64bit. It's running fine as I want it in 32 bit - and once all hardware is supported I'm going to jump across. I don't need anything else atm, I'm not a gamer either so I think I'll just save my money or go to Linux

Blimey, I thought that M$ wanted to cut down on piracey, but it looks to me like they will help to promote it further with these prices :(

Isn't the Ultimate version $399, which is about what... about £215? How come they have slapped such a massive mark-up on it, I guess it's down to all this EU nonsense on anti-trust?

Well, I'm hoping to build a new DX10 rig next year, so will more than likely be getting Vista, but I'll try and source one from over-seas, as I refuse to pay such a huge mark-up.

Scort.

Ok this obviously isn't sinking into certain people so I will say it again.

These are the full retail prices, oem and upgrades will probably be much cheaper.

So stop saying you have to pay £300 for the ultimate version when it will more than likely be half that price.

hope my uni decided to add it to the MSN Academic Alliance before I leave next yeah otherwise I think i'll stick with xp for a while.

Ah ok, kinda seems silly then that they made a 32-bit ultimate version on RC1 etc. At least this way it will force x64 driver development, i mean who buys non 64 bit cpus now anyway

How does the upgrade versions work? I mean....is it the full version of Vista that just detects XP on your machine then installs Vista?. Or is it an upgrade for XP to vista. If that makes sense (which I think it doesn't) :p

Thing is, most of the people on here will probably get a YAAAAR!! copy anyway ;):p

Im going to have to look much more closely at what is actually 'extra' in the ultimate edition. ATM bugger all of any real use comes to mind, oh and Aero Glass is the most over-hyped bunch of cack I have encountered since the Source engine  Other than that, and assuming the gaming performance issues are down to drivers, its cool. LOL

There seems to be a trend on these forums for blowing things out of proportion, like the £500+ PS3 etc.
