Right [edited by a don] installed a version of Vista, keep getting a bloody memory reference error. Now i am going to buy it just wanted to see if it worked first drivers etc. Now the version i ddownloaded is a extremly stripped down version 600mb fits on a CD. Is this error occuring because it has been butchered or do u think its my hardware. Cheers guys.

Is it a BSOD? Can you post the details of it here?

If it's not a BSOD then it probably isn't hardware related.

No its not BSOD it will be for example when i go to download something, it will come up with a error box saying something about memoruy reference cant remember the code. You click ok and it exits internet explorer and u wont be able to open it again without the error message untill you restart the pc. Im guessing its the butchered Vista having problems it has all sorts of bits missing from it to slim it down.

Yes that sounds very much like a corrupted/butchered install you've got there.

Vista isn't as bloated as people make out and it has much better memory management than XP so it doesn't "impact" on the system. I'd personally do a clean and genuine install.

Downloading anything like that is a risk at best.

NathanE is spot on, i'd reinstall with a genuine copy, you may well find that your problems will disappear.

Yeah like i said it was just a test of hardware and drivers, gonna sort a genuine copy. I find Vista suprisingly fast i rather like it. One question im swayed towards 64bit Vista, is driver support as bad as all the scare mongers make out.

With the hardware in your sig. you should be fine.

The difference between 32 and 64-bit in terms of driver support on Vista is very very small. Generally vendors are releasing 32 and 64-bit drivers in tandem.

x64 Windows will feel a bit snappier due to certain optimisations Microsoft made to the kernel that take advantage of new features in the AMD64 instruction set.

Also x64 Windows lets you break through the 4GB memory barrier without even breaking a sweat :)

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 here on a C2D E6300 and 4GB of Corsair and everything is quite literally "instant" in terms of multi-tasking. Also thanks to Vista's Superfetch I always seem to beat other people when loading a multiplayer C&C 3 game :)

Always a handy feature with any release of Windows! :D :p
