Vista re-naming tool

whitecrook, ive changed one album ok. But now when I go to 'add or change directory' the album that ive edited always loads up when I start mp3tag. Then when selecting 'add or change directory' the folder tree does not allow me to expand my music, it only shows the album that ive just edited. Tried deleting it etc.

A another thing, what do the action groups do that you wrote about allow you to do?

Also can you save profiles in m3tag for like indie music dance music etc and to save the settings you use in extended tags?

Don't know -

I always drag the files/folders that I want to tag and drop them on the mp3tag window. Never used add or change directory.

I think the action groups can do loads of cool things but I never looked into it. I just used the defualts which tidy up the text - %20, _ to space, etc, and capitalise the words to make it look neater than all lower case. Jus tick the boxes and it works.

The last 'opened' album / files will always reappaer when you next load it up. This normally isn't a probelm, just load the required files you need.

What I did was make a 'tagged' folder, and a 'not tagged' then dragged every folder containing mp3 s (one at a time, I worked through sequentially, My music used to be sorted by date aquired, so i'd have a folder 26-06-06, and maybe 10 albums in, then the next date 01-07-06 with 2 or 30 albums in etc) then As i tagged each album I moved it in explorer to the tagged folder.

Any that needed manual tagging or a bit of work I stuck in not tagged, which I did at the end.

If I wanted to go all crazy and rename the paths and stuff like you I would probaly do as above, and then do a simliar thing, say 5 albums at a time, and just renamed all with the same mask, and place in a newly created 'renamed' folder. etc.

If you are still having difficulty, may I recommend just installing Itunes, (even if you hate it - only for the purposes of tagging) and using it's auto organizse library, and adding each album to your collection as above, one at a ime, and tagging in itunes - itunes tagging is very similar to mp3tag. The advatage is it also orgainises your file structure nicely.

Then once htat has happenned you can then run them all thourgh mp3tag to get 'exact'y the file structur you like. as I tunes truncates the file names, and dones't seem to allow you to choose the naming schema.

At the mo, iam adding the album, connect to amazon find album, then extended tags edit those, then Right Click -> Convert : Tag to filename

Iam doing this for each album so its taking a while! Not sure if there is a quicker way?

'add or change directory' needed to delete the previous one first. Didn't know you can use drag and drop.

Ive got a few mixed albums eg,

(03) [Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso] Umbrella

if I use what iam using at the mo, iam only left with the song name 'Umbrella', how do I show both when I Right Click -> Convert : Tag to filename, and then you key in the mask you want $num(%track%,2). guessing I need to add something like %title% ??

Discogs never seems to connect either, is it poss to add additional 'tag sources' ?

Going to give Itunes a miss tbh, thanks anyway.

Thanks again

Any mp3tag users, can you help me out?

Ive got a few mixed albums eg,

(03) Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso - Umbrella
(07) Dirty South Featuring Rudy - Let It Go

Not sure why you're getting so many problems.

I don't quite understand what you ar asking.

What do you mean by mixed album?

is
(03) Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso - Umbrella
(07) Dirty South Featuring Rudy - Let It Go
the name of 2 albums ? or 2 tracks from an album, or what?

is it the file name, ?

The file to tag mask would be:
Code:
(%track%) %artist% - %title%

If you mean you have tracks on an album with featured artists or duos etc, then that's not a tech problem, it comes down to how you want to organise your music.

Persoannly, I added an %album artist% tag and tagged the whole album, this is good for DJ Mix cds, where the album artist is the DJ, but the tracks each have their own artist.

You can also put in VA or Various for albums like Now68 and stuff, then searching for compilations should be easier.

Sorry didnt explain myself vwell.

This is how I want it all arranged

Untitled-25.jpg

But in mp3tag when I go to Right Click -> Convert : Tag to filename it comes up with this,

2-6.jpg

By a mixed album I mean something like this http://www.amazon.com/Search-Sunris...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1199024217&sr=1-1

Bare in mind that on amazon they have the track name first then artist, and I want it the other way round so

01. Tastexperience - Tantrix

So what I need to do is change the artist DJ Tiesto the the artist off the track not the DJ who mixed the cd so it will be Tastexperience

are just two tracks from an album.

Also when editing double cd's do you know how to change the numbers on CD2, as amazon just carrys on the numbering from CD1. Ive tried the auto-numbering, but no joy.

Thanks again :)

Organise your mp3tag window better with columns that are actually useful, like this:

albumartisti.jpg

To deal with the problem of each track having individual artists, as well as the album itself, (i.e mix cd, your cd above, compilations) add an %album artist% field, this is standard among many mp3 players. As in the picture above, in right click colums -> customise

MP3TAG.jpg

This shows how to do multiple discs. From Tools - Options. Use a %discnumber% field. Understood by many mp3 programs. To do track numbers use auto number in the menu at the end, and check auto increment for directories, this will work if each set of tracks in in a different folder. But there is no autonumber for discnumber unfortunately (unless i missed it)

To get what you are wanting I can see a problem now. You don't appear to have the Title of the track anywhere already, (not in filename, or other tags) so you'll have to type in manually unless you can extract the track listing form amaxon into a text file and then rename using the Convert -> Text file to tag feature . I used a coupel of times.

If, on the other hand your file was tagged something like %artist%=DJ Blah, %title%=Track01-Artist01 then you waould have to write the tag to the file name, and then the filename back the taag using appropriate masks, as there is no way as far as I can tell to move from Tag to Tag directly using a regex / mask.

Here are the masks I used to rename some of my files:

Thanks for all this, slowly getting there.

Managed to sort out the disc numbering but I can figure out how to arrange the filnames as I want. You said 'To deal with the problem of each track having individual artists, as well as the album itself, (i.e mix cd, your cd above, compilations) add an %album artist% field, this is standard among many mp3 players. But iam still getting 01. Tantrix

What did you put in the field for 'album artist' in Tag panel?

You don't have the artist information for your tracks already - so you will have to key it in.

For each track, key in the artist name for each track. Click in the first track %artist% field and then hit return and it'll move down through them all. The software isn't magic, sometimes you do need to enter in some data.

Then you select all tracks and make the %album artist% = DJ Tiesto.

For album artist in the tag panel I used ALBUM ARTIST and ALBUM ARTIST.

I was hoping for a bit too much :p

I thought that by having all the details in amazon I wouldnt need to edit things myself.

Eg 1. Tantrix - DJ Tiësto, Tastexperience

Ah well

The only other issues is that mp3.tag never connects to discogs, as ive got quite a few albums that are not on amazon. Also can you move the columns around easily? I was hoping you could drag and drop but this in nopt the case. Yous looked much better laid out that way.

copy and paste this into a text file: say c:\tmp.txt

Code:
1. Tantrix - DJ Tiësto, Tastexperience
2. Golden Desert, Pt. 2 - DJ Tiësto,
3. Summerbreeze - DJ Tiësto, Kamaya Painters
4. Touch Me - DJ Tiësto, Rui Da Silva
5. Eugina (Michael Woods Remix) - DJ Tiësto, Salt Tank
6. Perception [New Vocal Mix] - Cass & Slide, DJ Tiësto
7. Diamondback - DJ Tiësto,
8. Dreaming [Lucid's 12" Club Mix] - BT, DJ Tiësto
9. Délirio [Venus Mix]
10. Angel Saved My Life [Mark Shimmon and 3rd Degree Bern's Mix] - DJ Tiësto, Fortress
11. 4am [Marc O'Tool Remix]
12. Home - Coast 2 Coast, DJ Tiësto, Discovery
13. Tyrantanic [Slacker's Kingdom Come Mix] - Breeder, DJ Tiësto
14. Airtight - DJ Tiësto, Max Graham

Then in mp3tag select the tracks in the right order, and right click Convert Text File to Tag.
Key in
Code:
c:\tmp.txt[/cpde]
for the text file, and for the next box key in a mask in the case above
[code]
%track%. %artist% - %album artist%, %title%

Then it'll work.

Right click the column headers and choose customize to reorder.

Getting this error when I right click Convert Text File to Tag

I saved the notepad file to C:\Users\Jim\Desktop and called it tmp as you said.

typed it in the wrong box, swap it about.

c:\users\jim\desktop\tmp.txt in the top box, the mask ( %track%. %artist% - %album artist%, %title% ) in the bottom
