As the other Vista thread has about 20 pages worth of people just trying to download the thing, I thought i'd start another thread for people having specific problems AFTER install. The other thread has got a bit too messy now IMHO.

So, if you have Vista problems, tips, tricks, guides, then lets keep them in here, and try a Q&A session rather than people just posting things that they've found out! (keep that for the other thread!)

I managed to install Vista onto my D: on my laptop. Its left me with about 10Gb, and if I remove XP from C: then i'll have 30Gb in total until my 60GB HDD arrives.

I'm posting this from XP as I (believe it or not) have a few Vista problems.

Only two problems mind (apart from it taking an age to do anything).

I think its wireless support is actually pretty pap. I have a USR9106 ADSL Modem (by far one of the best i've ever used), and in this laptop i'm using a USR5410 PCMCIA wireless card.

Now, I jumped on to USR last night, and there are no updates for this device, however, Vista was confident that it had one that would work through WU. I let it do its thing, and it came back saying it was sucessful, yet in device manager the Card is listed as something totally different (not USR). Now, in the Network Properties, I can see the wireless network, but it says something about my adapter (i assume it means my card) is not compatible to access this network. The wireless card has a red light on it which means its working (as in installed), but wont let me connect. Is it worth me dropping the router security to see if I can connect!?

Secondly, This laptop runs on Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 graphics card. Vista is also having trouble with this. Are there any updates!?

Thanks

My acer ferrari 4005 has got inbuilt wifi, vista was showing that all the correct drivers where installed and everything looked ok in device manager, but i couldnt use the net.
I installed the xp broadcom wifi drivers, turned broadcast on, on my linksy modem/router and can now connect no probs.

My Belkin 54g wireless card, dosent work. It installs some of its own drivers and lets me installl the belkin driver but it dosent use it. When i click on the belkin wireless icon it says it cant be found. This is on the 32bit version on my laptop, in the end i uninstalled it, its no good to me my machine locking or crashing all the time.

It's installed drivers for the chipset used in your card. USR will just've repackaged it. It's possible that these universal drivers don't have support for the security you're using, so it may be worthing ditching security to see if it works.

ATi's site has Catalyst Drivers for Beta 2. The notebook ones probably cover yours, but have a check.

K removed security, but I still cant get this to work! Wireless Vista rules are pap!!

Interestingly, my Vista edition is installed on the D: of my laptop. The partition of the HDD is split in two. C: has XP Pro and D: has Vista on it.

What ever changes I make to Vista, happen to XP!!

WTF is that about!?

Guide:

Sound drivers, LAN drivers etc.
---------------------------------
When I tried to install LAN and sound drivers the installs wouldn't run because the CD wanted me to have XP.

Anyway, I looked in to it a bit and you can install them like this:

When Vista tells you there's new hardware click "Don't have disk", then press browse and go into your CD - the directories might be a bit like E:\Drivers\LAN or E:\Drivers\Sound. When you have found the folder you're looking for highlight it and press OK. Click next and Vista will look through that folder for drivers and install them. This worked 100% for me :)

Craig.

Most things seems to work for me, apart from the bluetooth usb dongle as i can't find an updated driver for it. Other than that seems a little slow at times, especially from boot up to get up and running and all programs that start up ie wireless netgear pci card. Vista managed to get my netgear drivers working, eventually.

Did have a small screen pop up when explorer was minimised to task bar, that used to show when scrolling over them that's now disappeared (if you have vista you'll know what i mean ;) ). Anyone know how to get this feature back?

Other than that fine :)

Im posting on behalf of a friend,

Basically when the laptop starts up there is no start menu or windows vista dock which were both there previously. Ive looked at the settings in the control pannel for the start bar and they are unchanged. everything else working fine, ie the windows button on the keyboard opens the start menu up.

Instead of the vista dock sitting on my screen with all the applications i originally placed in it when customiing my dock, its disappeared, but when a program is run it places an icon at the bottom of the screen

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

i get error 80070241 during installation, some people say its due to bad dl, some just dont have a clue, according to microsoft forums, wtf!

Does this version have the flip 3d screen, or will that be in the final version only? I have tried a few things to see if it works, but can't seem to get it to?

Impossible! Vista and XP would have to share the same registry etc. for this to happen, and I am 100% sure they do not share the same registry.

Tis true, although i dont mean literally.

Take for example the following. I installed the USR Wireless application for setting up the PCMCIA card on VISTA.

XP then refused to work properly, and when I looked in system restore on XP I could only recover back to the installation of the USR application that i'd put on Vista!!!!

You haven't gone an installed them both on the same partition have you?
EDIT: reading your earlier post, no you haven't. So either you're wrong, or this is just one weird weird issue!

Can someone try this. Copy a image into paint, select the free form button, and click once somewhere on the image. Then stretch the image diaoganly. Does the image do this: http://www.ultimateunity.co.uk/images/bug1.jpg

nope mine doesn't (32bit)

biggest problem i had so far was that it installed drivers for an old tv capture card i had through windows update... but on reboot it bluescreened as soon as it hit the desktop. i had to safe mode it and uninstall the drivers to get it working again (making sure i don't let it windows update that hardware anymore!).

apart from that it's been mostly ok, and actually i'm very impressed. although dissapointed by the sidebar widgets. the photo' one won't let you select alternative directories, and there is just a general lack of options (although in time i am sure that will change!).

and can all people posting problems/fixes please state which vista they are running (32 or 64 bit) as it will make a big difference with drivers.
