Realised i didn't have much space left on my c drive (25gb total) so fired up treesize free, cleared a few bits down (forgot my transcode 360 cache was on C!) then looked in the windows folder as it was nearly 12gb. 6.5gb of that was in winsxs, after a little bit of research if looks like this folder is used for side by side dll stuff. When upgrading or installing a load of programs this is expected to be large but i didn't upgrade and i haven't installed loads of apps let alone 6.5 gb worth. Some people have mentioned having large folders on near fresh installs with just 1 or 2 apps.

So my point is will this thing just keep growing? I imagine it will have some serious implications if i delete it so what should be done?

WinSxS is a system folder, and you mess around with system folders at your own peril. Things can go very wrong if you do. The "right" thing to do is increase the size of the system partition if necessary (which may involve a bit of work, like re-partitioning, re-formatting, re-installing; but it's going to be worth it in the long term).
