Just found an old Toshiba Quosmio F50 laptop in a cupboard - has to be around 12 years old.
Still on Vista - is there a way to upgrade to a newer OS for free? (I still have the Vista key if that helps)
Or should I throw it in the bin?

Works, apart from the screen flickers sometimes (but a change of angle of the screen sorts it - loose connector maybe?)

Thanks

Not free, but you can get win 7 keys for peanuts off an auction site, and then upgrade to 10.
If you have another win 7 machine to hand, the key code on the label may activate a win 7
install, and again upgrade to 10 for free.

How about a lightweight Linux OS? It'll run better than any modern Windows OS on old hardware while having up to date security patches and support for the latest Web browsers etc.

Something like Zorin OS Lite will run on very basic hardware and isn't a million miles away from what a seasoned Windows user would expect to see.

If you've never tried Linux before then it's a good way to start. If you don't like it then go with another option, no harm done.

Will linux work with most modern programs and browsers?
I don't know much about it tbh, so sorry if a stupid question

Depends exactly what you want to do. Nearly all versions of Linux come with a browser like Firefox or Opera. They nearly always come with Word and Spreadsheet software.

Assuming you only want to browse the web and do light office tasks it'll do all that out the box no messing.
