vista-which version for gaming

Vista is the way forward for gaming particularly with DX10. Today, as we speak, nvidia does not have any decent drivers and the currenct ati flock are not the best optimised. Therefore, for the moment Vista is not the best upgrade, indeed, at the moment you will actually see a slight disadvantage with games running on vista, as opposed to xp. I deliberately say 'slight' i.e. not enough to upset you!

Vista is the way forward. DX10 is one but reason.

By all accounts Home premium will provide all your needs but it is suggested that ultimate has, additionally, been tweaked to allowed enthusiasts (such as gamers) to download extra upgrades for Windows tweaks. What these exact tweak will entail nobody knows.. but what is clear they will not be available to non-ultimate users... Gamers are apparently destiend to benefit from 'ultimate downloads'.

I am purchasing ultimate retail because I look at it as a small investment for a "5-year game" with at least 5, 8-years worth of patches and support.

retail option provides both 32 and 64 bit versions i.e. during the install you are asked whether you want to install the 32 or 64 bit version.

If you are unhappy with your install, you can reinstall with the opposite choice.

vista was awful for gaming when i tried it. Admittedly the only game I play is LFS, which runs at a solid 90fps in XP, it was unplayable in Vista, incredibly jumpy.

proply wait awhile to see how other user get on,not all manfacturers will be updating current hardware and items like printers and scanners

Whats the diffrence from the Retail version and the OEM PK version and the Upgrade version it's all so confusing.

from what i read the retail allows you to update your hardware as much as you like without registering every time, not 100% on than/where oem is oppsite and you can get either the 32 bit or 64 bit version seperate, where retail has both

Cool i upgrade my system a lot so i now know which one to get thanks. I was wondering as it a lot more expensive.

Id wait a while until either nvidia or ATI release some decent drivers.
Gaming on vista at the moment takes not a slight but huge performance hit compared to XP.
Ive been gaming on vista since it was released on msdn.
In source games, css, day of defeat source, with the same settings i was getting between 60-130 fps on XP, in vista its between 20-50fps which is a huge loss.
Other games have seen similar performance drops.
Its all down to drivers, ok Vista hasnt been released to the general public yet and nivida/ati havent released a 'decent' driver, but it seems to me as though they might be having some slight problems getting a decent performance driver workin.

would agree with scoobydoo on that
at moment ,dx10 will be in games maybe in summer
that only reason i would upgrade to vista, not mad on idea of getting vista ulmate version ,put will be best option for me,will wait couple of months after several updates to fix things and then get it

if i was to have vista installed, with a DX9 card (7900GTO) and i bought a DX10 game. would i be able to play it even though i had a DX9 card.

more to the point, would the game be DX9/backward compatable?

Give it a month or two and you'll be getting a higher FPS than with XP.

I think there may be Direct X settings for games made mainly for DirectX 10.

Yes you will still beable to play games but won't be able to use all most of the DX10 features.
