Yes there is a reg hack to fix this, copy and paste all of the quoted text into a file and name it vista.reg or similar (as long as its .reg) and run it. This re enables updates and works fine, Ive noticed that I still need to rerun it every so often.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects\LocalUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate\DisableWindowsUpdateAccess]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"NoWindowsUpdate"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000

"AUOptions"=dword:00000000

LOL not sure how those gaps appeared, must be an issue between notepad in 2003 and xp... strange.

didn't seem to work, still get the same error message. :(

perhaps that code is an xp thing? or have you used it on vista?

If you want, i can email you the original I have sat her in my inbox. Its definately a vista fix and has worked on several of our office notebooks.
nelsbrem at hotmail.com obviously change the at to the @ sign. Ill forward it to you.

Am getting similar errors (can't remember the numbers as at work) - seems to be affecting an IE7 update, some email update, and a Vista update. Can download them, but not install them.

OEM version of Vista x86 Premium

Oddly, the error codes aren't on Microsoft websites anywhere either... :o

still haven't fixed my error.

is there a way to manually download and install updates, as otherwise it doesn't look like i'll be updating windows!!
