Hi.

I'm switching to Vista x64 shortly , but i am not convinced i have driver support for connenting to the net.

I have 2 here :

Sagem Fast800
Speedtouch330 ( ThomsonST330 )

I've Googled , but found no definitive Vista x64 drivers ( I've found "just Vista" and possible beta x64 drivers ).

Is anyone using either of the 2 modems that i have ?

or

Can you recommend a bog standard ( i don't need wireless ) Vista x64 compatable adsl modem ?

I can't really switch over if i'm left without internet connection :(

Any help , please.

Mark

I doubt you'll find a USB modem that will work correctly. What motherboard did you buy that doesn't have a LAN Port? I thought they were 'standard' on all motherboards these days?

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R

It has a LAN port . ( is that the same as an Ethernet port ? )

As you can tell , i know my networking

get a router, they're sooooo much better than a modem, and more secure, and you don't need to install any software

once you've used a modem, you'll never go back

they're simple to install and once you've typed in your user/pass (only on dsl you'll need one, cable just plugs in a off you go) in the initial setup, all you have to do is plug in ethernet cable

if you're on dsl, it goes like this..

phone line - router - pc

if you're on cable it goes..

ntlwallpoint - modem - router - pc

they come with easy instructions, plus you can plug in loads of pc's then

Can also get an ADSL modem/router combo unit thats what I had when I was on ADSL,I'm on cable now so have Virgin cable modem connected to a Belkin n1 router then to PC.

At the above 2 posters ^^

Can you recommend an ADSL modem with ethernet ?

Bledd , you recommend a simple / starter solution for me ?

Cheers,

Mark

The mist is beginning to clear :D

So i connect that to the phone socket , then to the LAN port and i'm OK for Vista x 64 * ?

* Because the mobo has Visat x64 LAN drivers

Correct ?

Go to this link http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Content_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1114037291160&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=9116027773H12

Click on Home network basics, need flash installed shows you how, quite easy but you are correct, just a little bit more to it.

Btw Linksys have great online help via phone, can talk you through it if you get problems.

all you need to know is this...

-if you go for a linksys modem router (non wireless) make sure it's a ADSL one with a 4port switch + modem (means you can connect up to 4 machines to it, with no extra config, just plug in and it works)

i'd go for a Linksys AG241, will have simple instructions to set it up

it'll go like this..

turn on router (with no cables attatched)
connect ethernet cable to pc and router (do this when the pc is on and logged in, saves hassle)
connect router to wall
open internet explorer, in the address bar, type 192.168.1.1 then it'll ask for username and password, type in "admin", "admin" in each of the fields, then type in your username and password in the linksys screen for your broadband, click save and tell it to 'keep connected'

now to use the internet, you just open IE/Browser, and it'll tell the router to quickly dial up and you're done

ask here if you want any help when it arrives

that's perfect

you only need drivers for your network card (or LAN drivers they might be called)

ethernet/lan/network cards talk to the router, so you don't need 'router drivers', basically a router will work with ANY pc that has a ethernet port

i'd definitely get that, and set up the lan side of it before thinking about the wireless part (even disable that for now, so neighbors can't use it) then when you know what you're doing a bit, have a go at the wireless side
