Looking for the best visually beautiful movies to both watch and study for art purposes, composition, lighting, cinematography etc etc.

Seen and love all the mainstream usual, Blade Runner, Inception, Avatar, LOTR, 2001, Star Wars, etc etc. Kinda into the futuristic, sci-fi type theme.

Any further suggestions? Titles I or other users may not have seen? :)

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Infact most Wes Anderson stuff is fantastic. Coen Brothers produce good stuff too. The Big Lebowski is rather cool.

No SF types here but all fantastically shot:

House of Flying Daggers
Lawrence of Arabia
Hud
Amelie
Hero
Rashomon
Road to Perdition

Another two Kurosawa films: Seven Samurai (to show what can be done with B&W) and Ran. The battle in the middle of the latter is astonishing.

Laurence of Arabia.

Almost every shot of Pan's Labyrinth could be from a Goya painting. From the same year another fantasy with as distinctive a visual style (but a weaker plot) is Tarsem Singh's The Fall.

Faust and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari are some standout films of the silent era. Metropolis is an obvious suggestion and fits your sci-fi preference.

I also echo Muban's suggestion of Rashomon and suggest you look at many jidaigeki films of that era; Kurosawa supposedly handpainted every storyboard of every film he ever made so you know anything by him will be something special (Ran being my personal favourite), and Masaki Kobayashi's Kwaidan is probably the greatest film, visually, I think I've ever seen. There's also something incredible about the subtly constructed shots of Ozu and Mizoguchi.

Sticking with Asia, probably the finest looking films of recent era are those of Wong Kar-wai. They seduce you just as much with their gorgeous visuals as they do with their irresistable romantic spirit.

And just because I watched both last night, and both are awesome science fiction, Dark City and Children of Men.
