Why has no one said Matrix... all 3? Since this is a studying thing we can ignore story line in the second 2 :p

But since The Matrix invented bullet time it has had one of the biggest impacts in recent years.

All 3 highly styalized and Reload has examples of poor CG.

One of the greatest sci-fi books ever written, terrible film though. Alien came out 5 years before it, was made for a fraction of the price and is the much more cinematic and enjoyable film. Dune should have really been a three part film like LOTR et al.

True, but Dune is complex book. Alien on the other hand, did not come from a complex book.

A better job could have been done of Dune I'm sure, if it had not have had a terrible development, and yes, it really need to be in two parts at least, so it didn't feel like a slide show of events.

The visual style of the film is stunning though, IMO at least.

TBH, I didn't think the cinematography was great in The Matrix. Most of the eye-popping scenes were CGI heavy and thus heavily reliant on post-production fixing/alteration. If you read Cinefex, you would not believe how much CGI is used in post-production nowadays (and yes The Dark Knight has a small amount of CGI believe it or not).

I'm more a fan of the beautifully shot at source type of film making (eg. great use of lighting, angles, etc). Someone mentioned The Thin Red Line, a favourite of mine for well placed camera angles and cinematography, somehow I forgot to mention that one :p

Spot on, awesome books but dire film, but the style of it is fantastic. I think any film by Michael Mann has great style (Manhunter, Heat ect)

Sci-fi films with great visuals:

Sunshine - Enjoyable film, some of the best visuals i've seen on Bluray.

Eden Log - This got bad reviews, but I think it's brilliant. Very dark and atmospheric, but with very nice lighting in places and very underestimated from a character interaction point of view.

Tron Legacy - Visuals are great, sound is even greater. Movie isn't the most enthralling of all time but can't say it's not pretty to look at

Sucker Punch
Pan's Labyrinth

The Good The Bad The Weird - My favorite film. I love the cinematography in this movie. The camera shots are superb and everything about it is so professionally executed and thoroughly enjoyable.

Brotherhood of the Wolf - I found this to be an interesting film and it certainly includes some nice shots during some fight scenes.

Dark City - Not to be missed. Very well shot, well acted and an odd, and very interesting plot. Very original movie and probably one of the best sci-fi films i've ever seen.

Hm, there are so so many though. I went through almost 1000 with Lovefilm over a few years.

The Warriors Way
The Road
Leon
No county for Old Men
Children of Men
The Thing
Fifth Element
Event Horizon
Pandorum
Doomsday (well, i thought it was decent...)
Dragon Tiger Gate
FF7 Advent Children
Ronin
