Vive cable extensions for set-up in room next door

So my plan is to have the Vive set up in the lounge while my PC will stay in the study.

The plan will also involve being able to relocate the light houses with relative ease when I'm dong seated VR vs Room Scale; though hopefully I'll one day be able to buy extra ones and Steam will allow for dual room set-ups...

Basically, I need to cables to extend the link box an extra 5 meters into the room.

My 980ti has 1 HDMI and 3 DP outputs. My monitor is one DP.

My thoughts at the moment.

Use a DP to MiniDP 5m cable like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0191XW4...lid=2ST901E4N1BK2&coliid=I3IX6TR3DSUMVM&psc=1

And a USB 3.0 active extension like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MPMFK...lid=2ST901E4N1BK2&coliid=I1XVORJSKTX2GI&psc=1

Then I'll stick a 10m HDMI to HDMI cable through to the lounge TV.

I've been reading the threads on Reddit and it's all been rather more confusing than I first thought.

Should the DP to MiniDP cable work? It's labelled as a male MiniDP to DP cable and I was assuming it's bi-directional and will work either way?

Or would I be best getting a good 5m HDMI for the Vive and coming up with a 10m DP to HDMI solution for the TV?

Also while the Vive is USB 2.0, the fact it's only 5m the USB 3.0 cable seemed affordable. I'm assuming it would work?

The trouble is, no one knows. It might have an impact on the latency, or it might not. You'll probably need to wait for the headset to be more widely available before anyone can give a definitive answer.

Watching the Tested HTC Vive review and they suggested the breakout box can be used as an extender using multiple boxes. Probably not that helpful right now unless you have buddies willing to lend you theirs!

I have some experience with this using projectors. I can tell you that even with a good quality gold plated 10m hdmi cable I needed an amplifier to send the picture that far down the cable. If you are talking 10m I can almost guarantee the signal will need to be boosted.

USB has an recommended length of no more than 3 meters. That said its easy to boost the signal

Yeah, by all accounts you can daisy chain boxes and they act as repeaters. That is if there is ever the option of getting hold of extra ones.

Hopefully once supply catches up with the initial shipments etc they'll start selling spares and replacements for things like the box and controllers. Especially the controllers as I think a lot of streamers and content creators would really like the third controller to attach to a camera to to do the kind of thing Valve have done with their promo vids.

I think this question came up before and a quick google threw up some hits where people had been trying out using longer cables between the box and the PC. Think a lot of the hits where on the Steam forums, or at least the more useful ones seemed to be. A lot seemed to be from developers that had them early.

From what I remember it was basically don't extend the head set cables, extend from the box to the PC and don't exceed the spec length of the cable type and probably avoid any kind of hub, repeater etc that isn't a Vive breakout box.

I've got a miniDP to DP cable here that I might need to use when mine turns up, as I think the Vive spec states HDMI 1.4 and having an AMD card it's only 1.3 so may need to use DP. Though I have a feeling 1.3 may be fine as I've not seen anyone mention it anywhere with AMD and it being an issue. But saying that I think I've only read one review where they mentioned they where using a FuryX but I guess the interwebs would have kicked off by now if it was a problem.

I've been running a 10m HDMI cable from my PC to the living room TV for a while now and I've never seen any degradation. Well, aside from the fact its 1080p v 1440 on my monitor :)
Can't comment on usb
