VLC causes orange vertical lines across screen, then my PC crashes.

Hi,

I have recently built a new computer, (see sig below for details).

I have had real issues with using VLC media player for watching videos, because loads of these orange vertical lines appear, slightly fuzzy, and appear to shimmer slightly left and right, and then the pc crashes, and the screen then goes blank. I then have to either push the reset button, or completely turn off then on again.

I don't know whether this is an issue with VLC player and Vista, as the rest of the PC seems to be running fine. I have run Prime95 for several hours OK. I have also reinstalled Vista as I thought that my installation may be slightly dodgy.I also found that I would get these orange lines sooner in VLC media player, when I had my Creative X-Fi fitted. At the moment I have removed it to try and increase the stability.

I have this 1 yr old BFG 8800 GTS 640 MB which I am ultimatly looking at replacing as soon as I have the money, and the latest 9800 comes out. But nonetheless, I don't want to have to ditch what was a £300 graphics card. It currently runs at idle at a toasty 60C, but I gather that this is pretty normal.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what the problem could be? Or whether you have had similar problems?

Cheers,
Matt

I have used VLC for years , on several different PC's with several different builds of VLC using XP and never once experienced a crash of that magnatude.

You could consider upgrading your OS to something decent like XP

Lol. I am beginning to think the same!

Its now worth noting that I just a similar result from running a video through windows media player 10. Although not these same kind of lines, the picture messed up, then the screen went blank and wierdly the audio continued to play! Had to reset again! arhhhh.

Sound like the graphics card then?

While I agree that XP>Vista, VLC should still work just fine under Vista. I've had VLC crash under both XP and Vista but nothing like you describe, it just disappears.

Is everything else working fine - games etc? If so I wouldn't worry about it. I'm guessing you've tried other video card drivers.

6600GT replacement card seems to be working fine.

I haven't actually tried any different drivers for the card. I am using the latest one, 169.25.

This morning I have replaced the 8800 GTS with a very very old 6600GT:eek: to see whether the problem lies with the graphics card hardware.

I ran VLC for several minutes, and had 6 videos playing at once, and none of these strange lines came up. I will do some further video playback testing in a mo, but it appears as though the graphics card may be at fault. :(

Has anyone had to RMA a BFG graphics card before?? How does the procedure work after 1 yr?

Thanks.

OK, so I spoke way too soon!

I have got the same problem again! The wierd vertical lines coming up everywhere, and a small cluster of them following my mouse cursor around...

I therefore am having to put this down to that most annoying incompatible motherboard in history, the Asus Stiker II Forumla, which I have had so many problems with.

Therefore I am going to have to RMA this board.

The 174's are the latest drivers, were well past the 169's. :)

Arh, well I am only downloading the 'latest' drives off the NVIDIA site, and that 169.25 is what they give me.... strange...

Anyways I think I have got to the bottom of the problem. I had installed a Beta BIOS for my mobo, 1001, and I think that is when these weird things started, or even in the previous BIOS release 0902. Therefore I have applied the 0901 release, and everything, touch-wood, is working fine!

I'm continuing to pray....;)
