VLC optimisation?

I've recently started using Windows Media Centre for everything, installed DivX Tech Preview so I can stream mkv files to my 360 and everything just....works. Menus are nice too, compared to File -> Open.

The complication is entirely in storing suitable header information - or at least enough to make a good codec selection decision.

A splitter is only as useful as how many stream codecs it supports. That's why the Haali changelog is full of things like "Added support for muxing FLAC audio as A_FLAC to the muxer" and "Added support for PCM audio with 7 and 8 channels".

It doesn't mean the guy has spent months implementing 7/8 channel PCM support. It means he has tweaked his splitter to support identifying those streams. By means of a some specific header information.

A splitter is directly responsible for offloading the decoding of a stream to the appropriate codec. Therefore, if it chooses incorrectly, you might find that DXVA doesn't work. That's why the best splitters (such as Haali) are popular because they are so damn good at identifying streams correctly and passing them to the correct codec. The authors, as you can see from the changelog, puts so much time into ensuring compatibility with even the most niché codecs.

It really is as simple as this.

You're getting warmer but still not quite there at all.

Seeing how this has descended into a conversation about several media players, has anyone used KM Player? I do and think it is rather good!

Too much stuff in it for me and they violate many open source licenses.

I have really kicked something off here!!!
An interesting arguement which I only partly understand and am reading the links before throwing my tuppence worth in...

Partly there
Installing MPCHC has solved one issue, it plays back the mkv file fine, both in MP and standalone. However, I am finding it very unstable using the remote to control playback. I can press play and fire the film up, but any other remote input (stop, pause etc) crashes the player and I have to kill it with task manager to get back to MP.
At least I know I can play back the files I want, and I will google to find out why Im having stability problems

You really do need to have MPC-HC set up correctly in both the filters dialogue and the output renderer in order for it to have flawless HD playback through DXVA.

Here is my settings:

On the Internal Filters section I have all filters enabled except the following Source Filters:

Matroska
MP4/Mov

And when playing back a 1080P mkv over local/lan it will say DXVA is being used:

And likewise CPU usage will be 5-8% max.

That will pretty much sort you out for English audio videos etc but mkvs with multipl audio/subs will probably favour having Haali Media Splitter installed as well so the audio/sub streams can be selected directly from the system tray when the video is loaded via the Haali icon - works better than the built in splitter.
