VM 30Mb new install today, slow speed?

I'm currently getting the most steady 12.65Mb connection you could hope for (the graph was very smooth on speedtest.net). Setting up a monitor using the thinkbroadband program and will report back. Should I just use it to download a 1GB file and post that?

I just find it hard to believe I'm in a congested area... I'm on the edge of a not-huge town in a normal residential area, there are no student areas at all in the entire town and I'm getting exactly 0 packet loss which would normally result from a bad over-congested area. I understand I will get throttled etc if I download a lot but I hadn't even downloaded 100mb at the time!

edit: graph here:

Shows higher than I was getting on speedtest but it's up and down a lot :( .

I'm afraid you may get throttled regardless of what you've downloaded. At least that's what I've experienced for the last couple of months.

However, and somewhat ironically, since I've cancelled Virgin, and explained the reasons why, my speed seems to have gone back to normal.

One on here:

Looks like this if congested:

Ok, looking good so far isn't it?

I didn't actually start it at 3:30am by the way, it just didn't start logging for a while for some reason :p .

Will post again tomorrow after I've actually used it through a peak time but I was using it for gaming last night and was getting good pings etc .

Try another browser. Try disabling your security software (Temporarily for a speedtest). If possible try another computer. So many things can cause slow speeds. I've seen java cause massively high pings and super slow speeds before (IE speedtest.net shows <1mbps but newsgroups downloading at 6MBps)

If needs be get a technician round to check it and he can tell you if there are any local problems. He might even have a laptop to test with :)

Worth checking if IP Flood Detection is turned off in the superhub, helps a lot too.

Superhub is in modem mode so I don't think it has any options at all, just the diagnostic type info.

Router is a Linksys WRT54GL running DDWRT by the way, so more than capable.

The image I posted above is self updating so you can see how it's fine, even through a (presumably busy peak time) of a Friday evening.

Guess it's time to phone VM? :( .

The WRT54GL won't take full advantage of 30Mb, it's why I sold mine and upgraded to a Gigabit router (WNDR3700).

orly?

Done just now!. So at least I know it's capable. The router CPU is overclocked if that makes any difference :p .

Wireless is limited to "54" Mbps, but wired connections are faster it seems :) .

Ahh wired!, although I had problems on mine wired but it wasn't overclocked or anything, just stock :p

Hehe, have been running 225Mhz (+25 / 12.5% over stock) 24/7/365 for about 3 years now! :) . I love tweaking things that aren't supposed to be messed with!

Going to have to keep an eye on this connection now, will keep testing at different times of the day but it looks like I might just be getting throttled on a night :( . I suppose the silver lining is that even 7.5Mbps I should be getting when throttled is still faster than my old connection at full speed! .
