I've had the bog standard grey (Samsung) VM box for about 18 months or so now but I recently discovered that it won't mute when I press the mute button on the remote. The mute logo appears on the screen but the sound is still coming through. The only way to mute the TV is to use the TV's remote.

My brother has a HD box upstairs in his room and because of this a VM customer service person quoted me £99 for another VM HD box and £30 to install it. If I tell them that the reason I want an HD box is that my VM box isn't muting or will they say I can have a normal VM box replacement but still charge me £130 for a new HD box?

This might not be any help to you but if it's connected via SCART check they're plugged into the right sockets or try a different cable.

The reason I mention this is that one of our Freeview boxes stopped muting when you pressed the mute button as well, it turned out when I had plugged it back in after flashing the firmware I'd plugged the to TV and to VCR SCART leads in the opposite way round (i.e. the to TV was plugged into the VCR one and the VCR one into the TV) into the back of the Freeview box. The picture still worked fine mind, hence why I thought they were connected fine.

It is connected via SCART but I've not disconnected it at all so I doubt its that. I might check the connection just to see if the cable has come loose.

Could it be a cable issue maybe?? If you can try another SCART cable just to make sure.

In the STB settings menu there is a guide on how to control the TV volume, select your manufacturer and it will give you a list of remote codes to try.

No probs :). Let us know how to you get on.

Also the HD box is worth the upgrade as it does a very good job of upscaling SD.

Ah, nice to know. Just thinking that if I can tell VM I've done all these things to fix the mute issue and it still doesn't work what are the chances of me getting an HD box free? Or will VM say I can have a like for like replacement for free but still charge me £100 for a new HD box?

i dont think any of the virgin boxes have volume controls anymore? the regular up/down volume control was stopped years ago and instead you have to setup the controll to your TV the mute is probably the same
